SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 1\To.355,223, dated December 28,1886.
Application tiled December 29, 1885. Serial No. 187,056. (No model.)
T all lull/0711, t may concern.-
Be it known that we, MARK A. SMITH and CHARLES F. YAEGER, citizens of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the count-y of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and lexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or iigures of reference markedthereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and shows a cross-section through the upper portion of a broom and the two metallic bands. Fig. .2 is an edge view of one band inclosing the broom-straw, and Fig. 3 is an edge View of the other band before lthey are joined in the broom. Fig. 4 is a front view of a portion of 'a broom.
This invention has relation to the manufacture of brooms; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter ,A designates a metallic band angularly bent at B B, and of sufcient size to receive the quantity of broom-straw needed to make one half, A', of the broom. This band A is formed from a single sheet-metal strap, C, which is rst bent up at B B, to form the arms D D. The prepared broomstraw is then laid upon the portion E, between the arms D D', but does not occupy the entire space between said arms. The arm D is then bent inwardly and downwardly upon the buttends of the broomstraw, and extends nearly over to the arm D. The arm D is next bent inwardly upon the broom-straw and upon the arm D, and extends nearly across the broom-straw. The portion of the broom thus formed is then placed in a forming-machine, and the depression or con` cave bend F is formed midway between its ends, at which time this halt` of the broom is ready to be bent to receive the other half of the broom, which differs slightly in its coni struction from the half just described. l
The second half, I, of the broom' is formed as follows: A shorter sheet-metal strap, L, is used in its construction, and is rst bent up at M M to form the arms N N. The broomstraw is laid upon the portion O of said strap, between the arms N N', and extends from arm to arm of said strap L. The arms N N are then bent inwardly, so as to compress and hold the broom-straw, and this portion or half of the broom is next placed i-n the machine and compressed to form the depression or halfsocket P. The lower end of the handle Q is then laid in the haltsocket l? and secured in place by a nail, B. The portion or half I is then laid upon the half A of the broom, the handle Q resting in the half-socket of said portion'or halt` A. The projecting ends S S of the portion A are next bent inwardly over the portion or half I of the broom, and are compressed thereon, so as to firmly unite the two sections or halves together, and thus complete the broom. By constructing a broom alter this method we are enabled to produce a strong, cheap, and durable broom.
Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A broom-section consisting of a vertical half ofthe broom-straw bound by a metal band compressed thereon, and provided with a de- 8o pression midway between the ends of said compressed band, substantially as specified.
2. A broomsection consisting of a vertical half of the broomstraw bound by a compressed metal band having its end projecting at the sides of the broom-section, substantially asspecified.
3. A broomsecton consisting of a vertical half of the broom-straw bound by a compressed metal band having projecting ends and a cengc tral half socket or depression therein, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with a broom-section bound by a'metal band having ya middle depression or concavity, of the broom-handle and a broom-section bound by a metal band having a middle depression and inwardly-bent In testimony whereof we affix our signatures clamping ends, substantially as specified. in presence of two witnesses.
5. A broom formed in two separately-bound Sections, one of which is'provded with exten- MARK A. SMITH. 5 sions adapted to overlap the opposite section CHARLES F. YAEGER.
in Limiting the same,substantia11y as specified.
6. A broom having its straw formed in two VtneSses: bound sections, depressed at opposite points JOHN NURSE, to receive a stick, and united, substantially as I E. E. JENKINS.
