E04d 1/00 U.S. Cl. 52520 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A building siding unit having an attachment strip which is adapted for securement to a building structure and which includes a forwardly extending retainer part which interlockingly and slidably engages a retainer means of a face panel to support said panel and to permit free relative longitudinal movement between the attachment strip and the panel.
CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED PATENTS AND APPLICATIONS This invention concerns an improvement in the building siding forming the subject matter of my U.S. Pat. 3,214,876 and my co-pending patent application, Ser. No. 729,785, filed-May 16, 19.68 and now abandoned.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to improvements in building siding units and comprises an attachment strip which is adapted for securement to the framework of a building structure and a depending face panel carried by said attachment strip. The attachment strip includes a retainer part which interlockingly engages a retainer means at the upper margin of the face panel and which serves to support the face panel and to permit free longitudinal movement between the attachment strip and the panel. The face panel includes parts at the upper margin thereof defining an inverted longitudinal channel and an upturned flange part at the lower margin thereof which is adapted for sliding interlocking engagement within the inverted channel of the face panel of an overlapped building siding unit in the adjacent lower siding course.
Building siding units have previously been formed from thin plastic sheet material which can have any of a wide variety of colors and which is substantially maintenance free and of long life. Also, siding units have previously been formed of metal sheets. However, siding formed from plastic or metal sheet material is subject to expansion and contraction which occurs with changes in ambient temperature. Those parts of each building siding unit which are overlapped by another siding unit are relatively insulated from the elements as compared to the exposed parts of the unit and, therefore, may expand a lesser degree in hot weather than the exposed parts. Also the siding may expand between nailing points causing buckling and distortion of the thin sheet material. It is therefore of paramount importance that the siding unit be designed so as to compensate for these varying rates of expansion and contraction.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide a building siding unit formed from thin sheet material having an association of parts which eliminate distortion of the siding unit due to expansion and contraction thereof during use.
It is another object of this invention to provide a building siding unit having a concealed anchor part and an exposed part which are formed from thin sheet material and which interlockingly engage so as to permit longitudinal movement between parts, thereby serving to compensate for expansion or contraction of the parts during use.
Patented Jan. 5, 1971 It is another object of this invention to provide a building siding unit having a multiple of component parts of which all or substantially all of said parts are formed from blanks of flat sheet material.
It is still another object of this invention to provide a building siding unit which is formed from thin sheet material and which is of economical construction and which can be applied to a building easily and rapidly.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a building siding unit which has a multiple of parts formed from thin sheet material and which can be rapidly secured to a building structure.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent upon a reading of the inventions description.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view illus trating building siding units of this invention secured to a building structure.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS The preferred embodiments illustrated are not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise forms disclosed. They are chosen and described in order to best explain the principles of the invention and their application and practical use to thereby enable others skilled in the art to best utilize the invention.
FIGS. 1 and 2 illustrate one embodiment of this invention wherein the building siding unit comprises an attachment strip 10 and a depending interlocked panel 30. Both attachment strip 10 and panel 30 are formed from thin sheet material which preferably is of a plastic composition, such as polyvinyl chloride, but which may be of a metallic composition, such as aluminum. Attachment strip 10 and panel 30 may be of any suitable length.
To secure the above described building siding unit to building framework 42 attachment strip 10 is interlocked with panel 30, preferably by inserting lip 18 of the strip between flange 50 and bend 44 of interlock portion 33 and pivoting the strip upwardly to align flange 12 and face portion 32 whereby web 16 and lip 18, that is the retainer parts of the attachment strip, are snapped into or interlocked with retainer means 56 of interlock portion 33 of panel 30, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. The interlocking parts of attachment strip 10 and panel 30 are so sized that panel 30 is firmly supported by strip 10 and yet may be free to slide longitudinally relative thereto. The assembled siding unit comprising interlocked attachment strip 10 and panel 30, is then positioned over the upper margin of a similar siding unit in the adjacent lower siding course which has been nailed in place to building framework 42. The upper course siding unit is then slid upwardly causing flange 60 of the butt portion 34 thereof to enter opening 54 of channel 52 of the underlying adjacent lower course siding unit. The relative sizes of flange 60 f the upper course siding unit and the parts defining channel 52 of the adjacent lower course siding unit are such that, with flange 60 received within channel 52, arcuate bend 48 of the lower course unit can abut web 58 of the upper course siding unit.
If desired, a substantially rigid backing panel 64, which may consist of insulation fiber board, can next be inserted behind the upper siding unit with its lower edge 65 abutting and resting upon flange 50 of the attachment I strip of the lower course siding unit as illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2. The upper course siding unit is then shifted upwardly until web 58 thereof and bend 48 of the adjacent lower course siding unit abut. Upper edge 67 of underlying backing panel 64 preferably extends at least to the upper edge 13 of nail flange 12 of attachment strip 10. Nails 47 or similar securement means are inserted through apertures 14 in the attachment strip of the upper siding unit and driven through the upper margin of underlying backing panel 64 and anchored into building framework 42 to firmly secure the upper siding unit in place.
FIG. 3 is illustrative of a modification of the embodiment of the building siding unit shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. Attachment strip 10 is modified to include an integral clip 68 which extends rearwardly from nail flange 12 at the upper edge 13 thereof. A backing panel 64' having a lower marging tapered at 61 is positioned against the back of the siding unit and is of such size that its lower end 65 bears on butt web 58 of the unit and its upper end 67 is received within clip 68 of the unit in assembled form.
The spacing between nail flange 12 and the substantially parallel lip 69 of clip 68 is approximately equal to the thickness of backing panel 64 at its upper edge 67. Clip 68 serves to retain the backing panel 64' in place against the face panel and may place attachment strip 10 and panel 30 of the siding unit in slight tension when assembled. This arrangement serves to prevent rattling of the component parts of the siding unit after assembly and securement to the building structure but still permits sliding interlocking engagement between attachment strip 10 and panel 30.
The upper siding unit, including backing panel 64, may be assembled at the factory prior to shipping or at the building site. The assembled siding unit is positioned over the upper margin of the adjacent lower course unit which is secured to the building framework and is then moved upwardly until flange 60 of the unit is received within channel 52 of the adjacent lower course unit. The upper unit is next nailed. as shown in FIG. 3, to the building framework 42 at 49. The tapered lower margin of backing panel 64 allows suflicicnt space between the backing 4 panel at its lower marging and flange 60 of the butt portion 34 for the receipt of the interlocking portion 33 of the lower engaging siding unit between panel 64 and flange 60.
FIG. 4 illustrates another embodiment of the building siding of this invention. Attachment strip 11 is of a similar construction as the attachment strip 10 illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2, but additionally includes a lip or hook 70 which is rearwardly upwardly return bent from the lower edge of flange 18 of the strip and which has its upper edge 69 spaced from web 16 of the strip. Panel 31 of this embodiment is of a similar configuration as panel 30 illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2 and additionally includes a web 72 which extends upwardly from the rear edge of flange 50 of interlocking portion 33 and which lies in substantially the same plane as the upper margin of face portion 32 of the unit. Web 72 terminates in a forwardly and downwardly return bent flange or hook 74 which is spaced from web 72 and flange 50 and which serves to slidably interlock with lip 70 of the attachment strip 11 as illustrated in FIG. 4 so as to firmly support a face panel 31 and permit longitudinal movement between the attachment strip and the face panel.
A backing panel 71 having a tapered lower margin 73 may be used with this embodiment of the siding unit. Backing panel 71 will preferably extend the full height of the assembled unit with the lower edge of the panel 71 bearing on web 58 of butt portion 34. This embodiment of the building siding unit can be attached to building framework 42 in the same manner as that previously described for attaching the building siding unit embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2.
The siding units of this invention illustrated in FIGS. 1 through 4 may each be formed from flat plastic sheet blanks which have a uniform thickness from .030" to .050 and which are shaped into the attachment strip and face panel of the siding unit by series of progressive bending or forming dies.
FIG. 5 illustrates another embodiment of the building siding unit of this invention. The attachment strip 75 of this embodiment is of a similar configuration as the attachment strip 11 of the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 4. Panel 76 is of a similar configuration as panel 31 illustrated in FIG. 4 with respect to the face and butt portions thereof. The interlock portion 79 of this embodiment includes a substantially horizontal top flange part 78 which projects forwardly from the upper margin of face portion 73. An inclined clip part 80 extends rearwardly and downwardly from flange part 78 preferably at a position intermediate the width of part 78. Clip part 80 terminates in a forwardly extending lip 82. Flange part 78 and clip part 80 with the upper margin of face portion 73 define an inverted longitudinal channel 84 having a narrow opening or mouth 86 at the lower end thereof. A Web 77 extends substantially vertically upwardly from top flange part 78 and lies in substantially the same plane as the upper margin of face portion 73. Web 77 terminates in a forwardly return bent flange 88 which is spaced from web 77 and flange part 78 and which slidably interlocks with lip of attachment strip 75. If desired, a backing panel 90 may be used with this construction of the siding unit. The lower end 65 of panel 90 will preferably abut and rest upon web 16 of attachment strip of the overlapped adjacent lower siding unit and the upper end 67 of the panel 90 will extend to at least the upper edge 13 of the attachment strip 75 of the overlying upper siding unit.
The siding unit embodiment illustrated in FIG. 5 may be assembled and secured to the building framework 42 in a manner similar to that previously described for securement of the siding unit illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2. The panel 73, interlock parts 78 and and flange 88 of the siding unit may be formed from thin plastic sheet material which is formed to desired size and shape by extrusion. Attachment strip 75 may be extruded or may be formed from blank sheet material shaped by progressive forming dies.
What I claim is:
1. A building siding unit comprising an attachment strip adapted for securement to the framework of a building structure and a depending face panel; said attachment strip including a forwardly extending retainer part; said face panel including a face portion having upper and lower substantially parallel margins, an interlock portion and a butt portion; said interlock portion including a retainer means at the upper margin of said face portion slidably interlocking with the retainer part of said attachment strip; said interlock portion including a return bent inner web joined by a first arcuate bend to the upper margin of said face portion and being rearwardly downwardly inclined, a return bent outer web joined by a second arcuate bend to the lower edge of said inner web and being positioned substantially parallel to the upper margin of said face portion, said outer web extending upwardly beyond said first arcuate bend, and a substantially horizontal top flange part extending rearwardly from the upper edge of said outer web; the upper margin of said face portion, said inner web and said first arcuate bend forming an inverted longitudinal channel having a lower opening; said inner and outer webs, said second arcuate bend and said top flange forming said retainer means; said butt portion including a substantially horizontal web extending rearwardly from the lower margin of said face portion and an upturned flange extending from the rear edge of said web; said web being adapted to slidably interlock within the inverted longitudinal channel of an overlapped building siding unit in the adjacent lower siding course.
2. The building siding unit of claim 1, wherein said retainer part of said attachment strip includes an offset downturned lip slidably received within said retainer means of said face panel between said inner and outer webs thereof.
3. The building siding unit of claim 1, wherein said retainer part of said attachment strip includes a nail flange positioned in substantially the same plane of the upper margin of said face portion.
4. The building siding unit of claim 1, and a backing panel positioned at the back of said face panel and having a lower end abutting the web of said butt portion and having an upper end which extends substantially to the upper edge of said attachment strip, said attachment strip including a return bent clip part receiving the upper end of said backing panel.
5. The building siding unit of claim 4 wherein said backing panel is spaced forwardly from the upturned flange of said butt portion.
