SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Not 355,189, dated December 28, 1886.

To all whom it may concern: f
Beitknown that I, JAMEs F. MoLAUGHLiN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsY in Telephonie Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to effect an improvement on my Aprevious Patent N0. 828,702, dated October 20, 1885, for the transmission of intelligence by vocal sounds, sign, or speech by` magnetic or electric impulses, whereby the sounds are increased in volume and intensity and greatly amplified.
ln carrying out my invention the wellknown magneto-electric machine maybe used, or any suitable machine for generating electricity.
The main features of vmy invention consist of enlarged metallic diaphragms or disks inclosed by mutable air-chambers, which concentrate at a certain point, either at the receiver or transmitter, and in the peculiar arrangement of the held-magnet, together with minor parts, which will be hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed outin the claims.

are brought to within a short distance of the inner sides of the ends of the box, as shown in the drawing, and around them and the whole length of the magnets of the generator is wrapped a layer or coil of wire for the purpose of intensifying the magnetic and electric effect produced .by the 'vibration of the ends of the box. One end of this wire is connected to line through binding-post X, and the other through binding-post Z. Such construction provides a dynamo or magneto-electric machine, the field magnets of which are Wrapped with an extension of vthe line-wire connected to the ground-wire. The thin vibratory ends of the inclosing -box, the airchamber, and the aural tube are for the purpose ofcontining and amplifying anysounds or signals the apparatus may transmit or receive.
From the foregoing it is apparent that whenever a call is made or the armature of the genmagnets is re-enforced. It will also/be seen that the means for automatically maintaining the efficiency of the apparatus and transmitting device is contained within the apparatus itself.
If from continued disuse the sounds reproduced are indistinct or weak, the maximum efficiency can instantly be regained by a rotation of the armature.
I would here state that l do not confine myself to the use of an aural tube to only one end of theair-chamber, as either end may be used to transmit or receive sounds or signs, according to the option of the user. Neither do I sion-pieces of the field-magnets, as the apparatus will perform its work without such extension-pieces.
