To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, CHARLES W. DAVIS and HENRY BATH, Jr., both citizens of the United States, residingin the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roll-Sticks for Carpets, Dry-Goods, &c.,which improvement is fully setforth in-the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a roll sticker barrel for carpets, dry-goods, &c.,

embodying our invention, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of a detached portion. Figs. 3 and 4 represent viewsof the inner faces of the heads of the roll stick or barrel.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Our invention consists of a roll stick or barrel formed of separable parts, which may be readily set up and have carpet, 820., wound thereon, and which may be easily removed therefrom, avoiding creasing or injury to the fabric.

Referring to the drawings, A represents slats, of wood or other material,'whose ends are fitted into heads B B, and form together a roll stick or barrel-on which carpet, dry-goods, &c., may be wound or rolled.

Each head is constructed of cast metal of polygonal form, the sides being plane surfaces and the corners preferablyrounded, asshown in the drawings, each of the said heads having an angular opening, 0, in its center for the re ception of a winding spindle or shaft, and on its inner face on each side a recess, D, into which the end of a slat is inserted. The recesses D extend at an angle one to the other, and are located near the periphery of the heads, and there is a recess parallel or coincident with each side of the head, so that the heads and slats form together an angular barrel, stick, or roll.

It will be seen that when the parts of the stick or roll are set up, as shown in Fig. l, the angular spindle or shaft employed for winding or rolling carpet, dry-goods, 850., may be passed through the openings 0 and within the several slats which constitute the sides of the stick or. roll. The stick or roll is now rotated by the spindle or shaft, as aforesaid, and the carpet, 850., wound or rolled thereon, both on the heads B and slats A, the periphery of each of the said heads being of sufficient breadth, whereby the carpet or cloth may be rolled on the head as well as on the slats without being liable to be cut or creased, the angular form of the roll-stick preventing the material from slippingwhen first rolled thereon.

When the roll of carpet or cloth is formed, the heads may be pulled outwardly, leaving the slats within the roll, the pressure of the carpet, 850., on the barrel forcing the slats one:

against the other, preserving the angular form of said barrel, and preventing the roll from unwinding to any material extent at its inner end. When the roll is to be transported or shipped, the ends of the slats may be covered by labels, 80c. but said slats may be entirely withdrawn, if desired, when the roll is formed.

In some cases we form one or more of the collapsible barrel on which cordage may be I wound, the same having a spindle portion formed of jointed segments and end disks, within which the cordage is confined; neither is it new to form a collapsible barrel of end disks slotted radially and having sockets'in which slats may be inserted; but in our construction herein described the end pieces or heads are of such breadth as not only to act as bands for securing the slats in place, but also to permit the carpet or cloth to be rolled thereon without injury to the same.

Having thus described ourinvention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa 1. A barrel or roll-stick for the purpose described, formed of heads and slats, the former having polygonal sides and provided with re- ICC purpose stated, formed of headsB and slats A, each head being many-sided, and having an Opening in its center and a series of recesses 0n-its inner face near the periphery, the recesses extending angularly relatively te each other and parallel with the corresponding sides of the head, substantially as set forth.

3. A roll stick for carpets or cloth, having heads with recesses D on their inner faces, one or more of said recesses opening to the outer edge of the head, and slats A, having their ends adapted to rest in the recesses D, all substantial] y as described.

4. A roll-stick for carpets, c0 mposed of heads and slats, the heads having recesses adapted to receive the ends of the said slats, one or inorc recesses leading to the outer edge of the heads, whereby one or more of said slats may WVitnesses:
