MAJOR BANOROFT, OF BLUN'I, DAKOTA TERRITORY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO ISRAEL E. YOUNGBLOOD, OF SAME PLACE.
PRINTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,118, dated De cember 28. 1836- Application filed December 17,1885. Serial No. 185,940. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAJOR A. BANOROFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blunt, in the county of Hughes and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in the art of printing, whereby the printer is enabled, without breaking the form or mutilating any portion of the type or rules therein, to print just such parts of it as he may desire, leaving the remaining parts blank, to be by subsequent impressions printed from the parts of the form from which no impression has been taken, or from another form.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to use my invention, I will proceed to describe it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a form of movable type and a frisket, the latter being so cut as to permit certain portions of the form to be printed. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of a tympan-sheet, those parts of the sheet which underlie the-uncut parts of .on the frisket and cut out those portions of the frisket which overlie the parts of the form which I wish to print, as shown at b. After having prepared the frisket in this manner, I cut out, as at 0, those parts of the tympansheet 0 which underlie the uncut parts of thefrisket opposite the type, in order to avoid I unduly pressing the unprinted parts of the card or paper.
On referring to Fig.1 it will be seen that by this method portions of an unbroken form can be printed by arranging the frisket and tympan in the manner set forth; also, as shown In Figs. 3 and 4, a cut may be so printed as to leave blank spaces on its face, which may be afterward filled by an impression from another form.
It will be apparent that a sin 1e impression presenting an outline different from that of the form and having a finished appearance, can be taken by simply arranging the frisket and tympan in accordancewith the design of the impression to be produced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
1. The combination, with a form of type placed on the bed of a printing-press, of a frisket, the portions which overlie the part of the form from which it is desired to take an impression being cut out, and a tympan having the portions which underlie the part of the frisket covering the part of the form not to be printed from out out, substantially as described.
2. As an improvement in the art of printing, the method herein described, consisting in cutting out those parts of the frisket which overlie those parts of the form from which an impression is to be taken and removing those parts of the tympan-sheet which underlie the part of the frisket coverlng the part of the form not to be printed from, then applying paper to the frisket and tympan s0 prepared and taking the impression, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MAJOR A. BANGROFT. Witnesses:
I. E. YOUNGBLOOD, F ED O. KIMBALL.
