EDWARD FELSBEBG, OF MONTGOMERY, PENNSYLVANIA.
MANUFACTURE OF LEATHER-LOOPIFASTENINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,068, dated December 28, 1886.
Application filed May 26, 1886. Serial No. 203,333. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD FELSBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing atMontgomery, in the county of Lycorning, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Leather Loop-Fastenings, of which the following is aspecitication, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for securing strap-loops to harness; and it consists in providing a fastener having attaching-prongs formed of sheet-metalblanks, all as will be hereinafter fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents face view of a fastener attached to a leather loop. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is aview of the fastener in the second blank form. Fig. 4 is a face view of the loop, the fastener removed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the fastener, and Fig. 6 is a plan View of the same as the blanks appear in the sheet metal before they are separated.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the fastener, which consists of the broad body portion a and prongs b,which.are bent at right angles to said bodyplate before being finally clinched to theloop B. The ends cof this loop are provided with slits d, to receive said prongs, and are firmly held together after the fastener is inserted and clinched, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
It will be seen that the fastener is easily attached to the loop or detached therefrom, and
serves to hold the loop or the ends thereof firmly together, thus dispensing with stitching the same, as heretofore, and any number of the fasteners can be struck up out of sheet metal at one time, as indicated in Fig. 6,without waste of material. At the same time said fasteners can be silver, nickel, or gold plated or japaned, thus making them ornamental, as well as serving as a strong holder for the ends of the loop, which may be stationary or slide.
By reference to Fig. 6, which shows the rows of blanks as they are cut in the sheet, it will be seen that the prongs b of one transverse row are equal in width and length to the spaces between the prongs b b of the adjacent series, the bodyportions abeing all of auniform size.
I am aware that it is not new to produce a sheet-metal fastener formed entire and having prongs adapted to unite the ends of leather belting, and I disclaim such devices, broadly considered.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The improvement in the art of manufacturing fasteners, which consists in striking out from a sheet of metal longitudinal strips hav-.
ing lateral prongs, forming aseries of H shaped blanks, as shown, then separating said strips transversely into single fasteners, and bending the prongs at right angles to the body of the same.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD FELSBERG.
