B24b 9/02 U.S. Cl. 51-340 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cylinder honing device having a revoluble member with radial guides for guiding hone holders for radial movement and on which the hones are disposed and conical cams on the revoluble member axially movable relative to one another to engage cam followers on the hone holders to produce outward movement of the cams, together with adjusting means on the revoluble member for producing relative axial movement of the cams and outward radial movement of the hones, and a flexible plastic ring encircling the hone holders and urging the same for movement toward the axis of the revoluble member. The device further includes an additional cam and cam follower aiding in causing parallel outward movement of the hones.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to cylinder honing devices of the ring tube, bushing, sleeve and cylinder grinding type.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In prior art devices for honing cylinders known to him, applicant has encountered difiiculty in moving the hones inwardly and away from the cylinder and in causing the hones to travel outwardly parallel with the axis of the revoluble member. These disadvantages applicant has overcome by using a flexible plastic ring encircling the hone holders for drawing the hones inwardly and an additional cam and cam follower for causing parallel movement of the hones.
In the drawings illustrating the invention FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a cylinder honing device illustrating an embodiment of the invention.
FIG. 2 is an end elevational view of the structure shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on 3-3 of FIG. 1 and drawn to a greater scale.
FIG. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 1 and drawn to the same scale as FIG. 3.

The cylinder honing device constituting the invention comprises a revoluble member A including a mandrel formed with threads 11 and 12 at its ends. Mounted on said mandrel intermediate its ends is a hub 13 which forms part of the revoluble member A and is secured to the hub by means of a set screw 14 (FIG. 3). The hub 13 is formed with four longitudinal grooves 15, 16, 17 and 18 which extend inwardly toward the bore 21 in said hub and through which the mandrel 10 extends. These grooves extend radially inwardly of the outer surface 22 of said hub and longitudinally through the same.
Slidably mounted in the grooves 15, 1-6, 17 and 18 are hone holders 23, 24, 25 and 26 of which the hone holder 23 shown separately in FIG. 5 and which are constructed of flat rectangular bar stock of a thickness to cause said hone holders to fit snugly within said grooves. The walls 27 of the hub 14 at the grooves 15, 16, 17 and 18 form guide means for guiding the hone holders for both radial movement toward and from the axis of the mandrel 10 and for longitudinal movement relative thereto.

Mounted on the mandrel 10 are two disc like cams 31 and 32 which have facing conical cam surfaces 33 and 34. Cooperating with the cams 31 and 32 are cam followers 35 and 36 formed on each of the hone holders 23, 24, 25 and 26. These cam followers have oppositely facing conical cam surfaces 37 and 38 of greater surface extent than the cam surfaces 33 and 34 and are in contact therewith. The cam 32 is backed by a nut 41 screwed on the threads 11 of mandrel 10 and the cam 31 is backed by a nut 42 screwed on the threads 12 of said mandrel. Stops 39 and 40 at the outer ends of the hone holders are engageable with earns 31 and 32 to limit the inward movement of said hone holders.
Along the outer edges 43 of the hone holders 23, 24, 25 and 26 are formed rabbets 44 and in which are disposed pairs of hones 45 and 46 which are cemented or otherwise held in position therein and attached to said holders. These hones are spaced apart in a longitudinal direction to form a space 47 therebetween. The spaces 47 are the same distance from one end of each hone holder so that they lie in a circle normal to the axis of the mandrel. Inwardly of the spaces 47 between the ad joining ends of the hones 45 and 46 are formed in the hone holders circumferentially extending slots 51 which extend through the rabbeted portions of said holders and communicate with the spaces 47. Encircling the hone holders 23, 24, 25 and 26 and disposed in the slots 51 in said holders is an O-ring 52 constructed of rubber or some other similar elastic plastic material. This O-ring rests on shoulders 59 at the bottoms of the slots 51 and enters an annular groove 53 in the hub 13 and in between the hone holders 23, 24, 25, and 26 rides upon the annular surface 54 of said hub formed at the bottom of said groove. This groove is wide enough so that the hone holders 23, 24, 25 and 26 and the O-ring 52 may travel axially a short distance relative to the hub 13.
In addition to the cam 31 a third cam 55 is employed which has a conical cam surface 56 facing the cam surface 33 on cam 31. This cam surface engages a cam sur-- face 57 on cam follower 35. The cam 55 and cam surface 57 on cam follower 35 cooperate with the cam 31 and the cam surface 34 to assist the hone holders 23, 24, 25 and 26 to move parallel to the axis of the arbor 10 when the adjusting nut 42 is screwed on the threads 12 of mandrel 10 toward the nut 41.
The revoluble member A is rotated by means of a connector 60 which includes a nut 61 screwed on the extreme end of the threads 12 on mandrel 10. This nut is held from rotation on said mandrel by means of a pin 62 extending through said nut and mandrel and projecting outwardly from said nut on both sides thereof.
The honing device is provided with hone holders of different sizes to fit different ranges of cylinder bore.
For use, the proper size of hone holders are selected to fit the cylinder bore to be honed. Cams 31 and 55 and nut 42 are already mounted on mandrel 10 and the nut 42 screwed toward the connector 60 to allow the stops 39 to rest on the cam 31 when the holders are first assembled. The holders with the O-ring 52 in slots 51 in said holders are then assembled by endwise insertion into the slots 15, 16, 17 and 18 in the hub 13 until the stops 39 overlie cam 31. Cam 32 is then applied to mandrel 10 and disposed within the stops 40. Nut 41 is now applied and screwed tight against the ends of the threads 11 on mandrel 10. The threads 11 so terminate that the slots 51 in hone holders are at the end of the groove 53 in the hub 13 adjacent cam 31 when the stops 39 and 40 rest upon the cams 31 and 32. The O-ring 52 is small enough so that it rests on the portions of the hone holders at the bottoms of the slots 51 and the portions 58 of the hub 13 at the bottom of the groove 53.
In operation the mandrel 12 and connector 60 are mounted in a chuck designed to receive the same and driven by an electric motor or other suitable source of power. The device is then lowered into the cylinder bore and the nut 42 screwed up against cam 38 until the homes 45 and 46 are moved outwardly sufliciently to engage the wall of the cylinder. Honing then proceeds in accordance with the usual practice.
The cylinder honing device comprising the instant invention is exceedingly simple in construction, can be manufactured at a low cost, and will not easily get out of order. The bones travel in parallel relation relative to the axis of the mandrel. The O-ring when worn can be easily replaced.
It is understood that suitable modifications may be made in the structure as disclosed, provided such moditfications come within the spirit and scope of the appended claims. Having now therefore fully illustrated and described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A cylinder honing device comprising:
(a) a revoluble member,
(b) hones circumferentially disposed about the axis of revolution of said revoluble member,
(c) hone holders supporting said hones,
(d) guide means carried by said revoluble member and guiding said hone holders and bones for movement toward and from the axis of said revoluble member,
(e) a cam on said revoluble member disposed at one end thereof,
(f) restraining means engaging said cam and restraining said cam from axial movement on the revoluble member,
(g) a second cam on said revoluble member disposed intermediate the ends thereof,
(h) restraining means engaging said second named cam and restraining said cam from movement in the same direction as the first named cam,
(i) a third conical cam on said revoluble member disposed at the other end of said revoluble member,
(1') adjusting means on said revoluble member engaging said third named cam and moving it toward the first and second named cams,
(k) cam followers on said hone holders and having surfaces engaging said cams,
(1) one of the surfaces between said first cam and 4 contacting cam follower tapering toward the other end of the revoluble member,
(m) one of the surfaces between said second cam and contacting cam followers tapering toward the same end of the revoluble member, and
(11) one of the surfaces between said third cam and contacting cam follower tapering toward the opposite end of the revoluble member.
2. A cylinder honing device comprising:
(a) a revoluble member,
(b) hones circumferentially disposed about the axis of revolution of said revoluble member,
(0) hone holders supporting said hones,
(d) guide means carried by said revoluble member and guiding said hone holders and bones for movement toward and from the axis of said revoluble member,
(e) a cam on said revoluble member disposed at one end thereof,
(f) restraining means engaging said cam restraining said cam from axial movement on the revoluble member,
.(g) another cam on said revoluble member disposed at the other end of said revoluble member,
(h) adjusting means on said revoluble member engaging said other cam and moving it toward the first mentioned cam,
(i) cam followers on said hone holders and having surfaces engaging said cams,
(j) one of the surfaces between said first mentioned cam and contacting cam follower tapering toward the other end of the revoluble member, and
(k) one of the surfaces between said other cam and contacting cam follower tapering toward the opposite end of the revoluble member.
