SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,033, dated December 28, 1886.
Application tiled April 19y 1886. Serial No. 199,307. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX Scnunrz, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Vent-Plugs, of which the followingv is a specitication.
This invention relates to an improved ventplug forbeer and other kegs; and the invention consists of a vent-plug having a laterallyextending tubular valve portion, a plug fitted in said tubular portion and having acentral vent-opening, means for retaining said valve portion, and an interior Hap-valve that is hinged by a ilange to a transverse recess at the upper part of the inclined face of theplug.
The invention consists, secondly, of a ventplug having a laterally-extending screw-collar, a perforated valve in said portion, a screwcollar for retaining the plug, and an auxiliary screw-valve supported in a yoke of the tubular valve seat, said screw-valve being fitted to a valve-seat of the vent opening, so as to close the vent-plug entirely whenever the operation of the same is to be interrupted.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation ot my improved vent-plug. Fig. 2 represents a vertical centralsection of the same, showing the auxiliary screw-valve in closed position. Fig. Sis an end elevation ofthe ve-ntplug with the Valves removed. Fig. 4t is an end view of the auxiliary screw-valve for closing the vent; and Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively a vertical longitudinal section ofthe valve ofthe vent-plug and an end view of the valve-plug.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. A
Referring to the drawings, A represents a hollow vent-plug, which is made of suitable cast metal in the usual size and shape, and tapering at the lower part, so as to be driven easily into the veut-bung of the beer or other keg.
The upper part of the vent-plug A is made heavier, so as to resist the force of the blows on the same. A tubular valve portion, A', extends laterally at the upper'part of the plug A,said tubular portion having astraight guidepiece, a, at the lowerpart for the flattened lower part, c', of a centrally-perforated valveplug, B. The plug B is provided with an eX- terior collar, b, that is tightly fitted by an intermediate packing-ring, b, against the outer edge of the'tubular valve portion A, and retained thereon by a screw-collar, D. VThe interior part of the valve-plug B has a downwardly-inclined face or seat, and` is provided with a flap-valve, C, which is provided with a suitable packing at its underside, so as to close the central vent opening, d, of the valveplug B. The Hap-valve C is hinged. tothe valve-plug B by a bent iiauge', e, which iange engages a transverse recess, e', at the upper part of the inner face of the valve-plug B, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
The operation of the vent-plug described is the saine as that ot other vent-plugs in usethat is to say, when the saine is driven int-o a bungl of the keg and the liquid drawn off' through the faucet, the flap-valve C is lifted by the pressure of the atmosphere so as to admitair to the interior of the keg, while at the'ruoment when the faucet is closed the flap-valve C is tightly pressed by the pressure of the gas inthe keg on the inclined seat of the plug B, so as to close the vent-opening (Z and prevent the escape ofthe carbonio-acid gas in the keg. The valve-plug B is securely held in position in the tubular portion A by a ring-shaped collar, D, that is screwed over the e'xteriorlyt/hreaded tubular valve portion Af, and provided with a diametrical bail or yoke, D, at the center of which a screw-nut is formed for the threaded shank E of an auxiliary valve, E, which ts tightly into the valve-seat d at the outer ,end of the vent-opening d of the valve-plug B. rPhe outer end of the shank E is provided with a milled head, E2, by which the valve can be readily adj usted in the yoke D', so as to close or open the vent-opening d, as required. An elastic packing, f, is nterposed between the vent-plug B and a shoulder of the collar D, said packing being provided with a central opening equal in size with the ventopeningd. Theauxiliary valveEpresses, on being closed, on the paokingf, so as to pro-l duce the herinetical closing of the vent-opening. The auxiliary valve Eserves for the purpose of closing the vent-plug A entirely, when it is desired to preserve a portion of the liquid in the keg over night, as thereby the passage of air through the vent-plug tothe :interior of the keg, as well as the escape of carbonio-acid gas from the saine to the outside, is prevented.
When it is desired to draw from the keg,
IOO
the auxiliary valve E has to be opened by turning the saine, upon which the valve ofthe vent-plug performs its function in the usual IDI/Hiller.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 2. rIhe combination of a vent-plug having a tubular valve portion, a valved plug having a central vent-opening, a collar screwed on the tubular valve portion and provided with a yoke, and an auxiliary valve fitted into a seat of said vent-opening and adjustable in said yoke, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my namein presl ence of two subscribing Witnesses.
MAX SCHUETZ.
