DYNAMO-ELECTRIC MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,946, dated Deeember`28, 1886.
Application filed March 21, 1884. Serial Na'lfi. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may 0011087072,.-
Be it known that I, ELMER A. SPERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inventcd certain new and useful lmprovenients in Dynamo-Electric Machines, and l do (leclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Thisiinvention relates to that class of dynamo-electric machines having eup-shaped electro inagnets With their opposite polar faces inI the form of continuous ciroles7 between which an annular drnxn-shaped armatnre is arranged to operate.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and then set forth in the claiin.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a magneto-electric machine. Fig. 2 is a detail showing means for communicating motion to the arinature.
The reference-letter A designates two shellshaped electro-magnets, which have solid end heads', and are chambered for the reception of a solid core-piece, A'. The abutting open ends of the shells A are provided with tia'nges a, for bolting` the same together, and the interior of the two connected shells conslitutes a continuous circular pole-face, opposite which is the coneentric solid core A, the two parts thus arranged tlius forming opposite polar surfaces in the form of continuous circles, which are concentric, or one within the other, as shown by letters N S N S. Between these concentrie surfaces is arranged a cylindrieal or annular ai'mature, B, to the ends of which are secured eircnlar plates D' D2, forming end heads for said armature. The peripheries of these plates are provided with continuous grooves for the reception of driving-belts c, which lead to a countcr-shaft, as is scen in Fig. 2, and communicate inotion to the armature.
The plates D' D2 surround shaft-shaped eX- tensions A2 of the core-piece A', which are secured to the end heads of the shells A by To the plates D' D2 are also secured oblique flanges J J', which rest upon anti-frction balls b', placed on conduct-ing-rings L on the extensions A2 of the core A'. These extensions A2 are screW-threaded and receive internallythreaded collars N, which are surrounded' by 6 sleeves N of some insulating material, the function of which isto support the conducting-rings L. The collars are adjnstably seeured on the shaft by means of jam-nnts O. By supporting the necessarily large bearingsurface of the interior of the rings D D' upon balls b', I obviate all undue friction and insure an unretarded rotation of the armature. These balls are conduetors of eleetricity, and the circuit is from the negative binding-post 7 15, through the conductor 16 to ring L, balls adj oining the disk D2, through said disk, the drum B, disk D', and balls adjoining the latter, and from thence by the insulated ring on the shaft through the Wire 17 to the positive 7 binding-post 20, and from thence to the fieldmagnet coils, in a derived Circuit, by the conductor 18, and to negative binding-post by the conductor 19.
lt should be observedin speahing of the shell-shaped sections A; as the electro-magnet that the exterior of these sections is covered With Wire coils F and F', connect-ed, respectively, by the wires 19 and 18 with the negative and positive binding-posts 15 20, the eoils themsclves being connected by means of the Wire 21V.
lt will be apparent that in a machine of the described type all of the active conductor or armature in revolving through the mag- 9 netic field is made to cut lines of force of a Constant tendency or direction throughout the whole of its revolution, and that the magnet presents a continuous circnlar polar surface to the action of the armature.
That I clairn is- In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination of the field-magnet having a solid corepiece with shaft shaped extensions, the conducting-rings fitted on said extensions and inr sulated therefrom, the anti-friction balls serving` asA electrical conductors, and the drumshaped armature supported upon said balls and rotating thereon, substantially as described.
In testimony Whereof Ia'ffix my signature in i presence of two witnesses. I
