O'Brien and Harvey B. Jacobson ABSTRACT: A hair roller and comb characterized by two coordinated units; namely, a roller unit and a supporting and handling unit. The roller unit comprises a mandrel on which a lock of hair is clamped and coiled. The handling unit embodies a collar provided with a changeable comb which is gripped with one hand and serves as a handle. An end of the mandrel is journaled for rotation in the collar and has a turning knob for the user's other hand. The ends of the units opposite the knob function to support a hair pin.
COMBINED HAIR ROLLER AND COMB This invention relates to certain new and useful improve ments in a hair roller construction characterized by a roller unit embodying a winding mandrel having a spring-biased clasp and a knob-equipped freely turnable journal at one end, and the combination therewith of a supporting and handling unit for the roller unit and embodying an annular collar which provides a bearing for the journal and the accompanying man drel.
An object, generally speaking, of the combined roller and comb is to provide a dual unit device which will enable the user to progressively comb and roll a selected tress or lock of hair into a curl, wet or dry, set the curl with a readily applicable pin curl clip, slip the mandrel unit out of the curl and,in so doing, dispense with the need for use of a multiplicity of conventional hair curling and styling rollers. Accordingly, a single device enables the user to proceed step-by-step until all of her hair has been rolled. If the hair has been rolled dry, it can be sprayed lightly all over with a hair set lotion or spray and, after the hair has dried, the hair pins or clips can be removed and the hair brushed.
Briefly, the herein disclosed invention comprises two units one of which is designated as a roller unit and the other one as a supporting and handling unit for the roller unit. The roller unit embodies a winding mandrel around which each lock of hair is coiled to form a curl, said mandrel having a journal and turning means at one end. The supporting and handling unit is provided with a collar which provides a bearing rotatably supporting the hand turned journal. This collar also supports a detachable comb which is normally parallel with the mandrel and which constitutes asatisfactory handle for the supporting unit. This latter unit is held in one, say the left hand, while the turning means for the mandrel is operated by the other hand.
In carrying out a preferred embodiment of the invention the mandrel is primarily hollow at one end and provides an axial socket which opens through said end in a manner to accommodatingly receive one finger of an attachable and detachable pin curl clip or an equivalent hair pin. The mandrel is provided at its other end with a shouldered journal which is journaled for rotation in the bearing of the aforementioned collar. The journal equipped end is provided with a conveniently accessible mandrel turning knob. A spring biased clip is provided on the peripheral surface of the mandrel. The outer peripheral surface of the collar has an integral sheath for reception and retention of a keying rib on the back of the bodily attachable and detachable comb. The comb serves not only for combing and smoothing the hair but, when it in its sheath-attached position, as a practical and convenient handle for the supporting and handling unit.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIG. 1 is a view in perspective of a combined hair roller and comb constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention and showing themanner in which it is employed to wind the lock of hair around the mandrel and how,in addition, the pin curl clip is initially attached and subsequently used to retain the set curl;
FIG. 2 is an exploded perspective view wherein all of the component parts are shown in their ready-to-assemble relationship;
FIG. 3 is a section on a slightly smaller scale taken on the plane of the longitudinal section line 3-3 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a section at right angles taken on the plane of the section line 4-4 of FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is an enlarged detail section taken on the plane of section line 5-5 of FIG. 3; and
FIG. 6 is a suitably enlarged fragmentary horizontal section taken on the plane of the section line 6-6 of FIG. 3.
As shown in Fig. l the roller unit is denoted by the numeral 8. As shown in FIG. 2 this unit is characterized primarily by a suitably elongated cylindrical mandrel 10 whose left end portion is provided with a socket l2 capable of receiving and temporarily supporting one limb or finger 14 of a pin curl cli'p'l6. The other or companion limb is denoted at 18 and will be referred to later on in the description. The right-hand end portion of the mandrel is provided with an encircling shoulder20 to the right of which the aforementioned journal 22 is located. This journal in turn has a reduced or extending end portion 24 which constitutes a shank for the attached sleeve portion 26 of a finger-gripping and turning knob 28. The journal and shank have a recess 30 formed therein to accommodate a coil spring 32 engageable with an offset portion 34 of a fingerpiece 36 at the end portion 38 of a hair attaching clasp or clamp 40. It will be noted that the junctional portion 38 is appropriately shaped so that it is capably fulcrumed on the coacting portion 42 of the mandrel. I
The coordinatingsupporting and handling unit is denoted by the numeral 44 and characterized by two component parts; namely, an annular collar 46 and a handling member which, more specifically, comprises a comb 48. The inner peripheral portion of the collar is provided at theright-hand end with an endless shoulder 50 which provides a limit stop for the aforementioned shoulder 20. That portion to the left of the shoulder 50 is fashioned into and provides a smooth bearing 52 for the journal 22. The external peripheral surface at the bottom of the collar (FIG. 2) is provided with a lug which is provided with a dovetail-shaped open ended groove 54 and which provides an attaching and retaining sheath 56 for the comb 48. More specifically, the right-hand end portion of the back of the comb denoted at 58 is provided witha dovetailshaped rib 60 which constitutes a key and which is retentively fitted into the sheath but is capable of being removed at will so that the comb can be detached and, if desired, used separately or replaced. The left-hand end portion 62 of the back of the comb is provided withan auxiliary socket 64 which is designed and adapted to accommodatingly receive the free end portion of the leg or limb 18 of the aforementioned hair clip (see FIGS. 1 and 3). The comb is also provided with conventional teeth 66. This comb, it will be noted, it is of a length commensurate with the length of the mandrel and when it is installed for use as shown the back of the comb is not only parallel with the mandrel but is spaced therefrom.
It will be understood that the clip 16 is exemplary of one type of hair clip and that many such clips are on the open market and can be used with the legs or limbs removably seated in the sockets 12 and 64 in the manner illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 3. It is also significant to mention that the device will embody many and varied sizes of rollers keeping in mind that the average user will almost always desire several sizes of rollers for various hairstyling and in fact various sizes of rollers perhaps even for the same hairstyle. The comb is removable and can be used separately or in combination. The manner in which the end of the hair is clasped on the mandrel is shown in FIG. 1. This view also shows the manner in which the pin curl clip is attached. Further it shows the manner in which the final curl is pinned by the automatically attached clip 16.
The views of the drawing also show the construction and arrangement of parts and the manner in which they are assembled and individually and collectively used. Accordingly, a more extended description is deemed to be unnecessary.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those'skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
