SHEET-DELIVERY APPARATUS FOR PRINTING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354-,872,datedDecember 21, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES POTTER, J r., of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Sheet-Delivery Apparatus for Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to an improvement in this class of presses; and it consists in the combination, with the two'revolution impression-cylinder, of delivery-slats and belts to convey the sheets from the cylinder, a stop or fence to arrest the movement of the sheet, gripper-fingers and a traveling cross-bar, by means of which the sheet is taken and laid upon the delivery-table, and a range of lifter-bars to raise the sheet up so as to be taken by the grippers. g

The frame A of the press and the impression-cylinder B are of any known character, and the impression-cylinder is provided with the grippers and delivery-fingers, actuated alternately, as usual. Across in front of the impression-cylinder is the range of deliveryslats2 2, supported by the stationary crossbars 3 3. These slats are at an inclination, and after the paper has been printed the grippers a are opened and the throw-off fingers a lift the advancing end of the sheet above the slats 2, and as the impression-cylinder makes its second revolution the sheet is slid down the slats 2 upon the range of tapes or belts 4, that pass around the pulleys 6 7, and by such tapes the sheet is carried along until its advancing edge is arrested by the fence 8. The train of bevel-gearing and shafts 9 10 11 pulleys 6 and the bolts 4, and also the mechanism that actuates the cross-bar and shaft 35, carrying the gripper-fingers 2122.
Between and parallel with the. belts 4 are the 1ifter-bars 25, connected with the headpieces 26 on the rocker-shaft 27. bars lie upon the support 28, near the fence 8, and at the end or ends of the rocker-shaft 27 there is an arm, 30, and a connecting-rod, 31, with a roller, 32, resting upon the cam 33. This cam 33 is shaped and timed so thatwhen the sheet has passed along upon the tapes 4 and reached the fence 8 the rocker-shaft is the tapes, so as not to be blurred by the tapes if there is printing upon the under side, and
the end of the sheet is brought directly into .the path of the grippers 2L 22 and seized by them and drawn off the lifter-bars, after which the bars descend, ready to receive the next sheet.
The gripper-fingers 22 are upon a crossshaft, 35,- and they are closed by the spring 36; and the arm 37, with a roller or stud at the end, is used to open the grippers by passing over the inclined switch 40, that is pivoted'at its upper end. The grippers and cross-bar being moved bodily and lengthwise of the press-by any suitable means, the switch 40 opens the grippers as they approach the end of the sheet as it lies upon the lifter-bars, and the stud or roller v41, passing off the switch, allows the spring to close the grippers, and the sheet is conveyed away by the cross-bar as it is moved. The switch 40, however, is raised by the stud on the gripper-arm as said stud underruns such switch, and when the gripperbar reaches the end of its motion the grippers are opened by the roller 41, upon the arm 37 having come into contact with the stationary incline 42.
The devices for carrying the gripper-bar back and forth bodily may be of any desired character. I have shown the screw passing through a nut, 51, at the end of the grip per-bar 20, it being understood that there are two screws, one at each side of the press, and that they receive motion from the gearing 52 53 and shaft of the pulleys 6. In this case it is necessary to revolve the train of gearing,

In'Figs. 5, 6, and 7 a different device is shown for moving the cross-bar 20, shaft 35, and grippers. In this instance the said cross bar and shaft are upon a shell, 70, at each end, and this shell 70 contains two bevel-gears, 53 56, one of which is upon a shaft, 58, that passes across to a similar shell upon the other side of the press, and there is a pair of gear-wheels, 54, gearing into rack-teeth 55 upon the frame of the machine. The other gear 56 is upon a feather and around the shaft 57, which corresponds to and is driven in the same manner as the screw 50; hence the shaft 57 will be rotated first one way and then the other, and as the wheels 54 roll back and forth over the stationary racks 55 the shells will be carried first one way and then the other, and the pinion 56 will be slipped along upon the feathered shaft, and the gripper-bar will be moved bodily, as aforesaid.
I remark that the sheet-delivery table 60 is below the grippers as they move back and forth, and upon that table the sheet falls as liberated from the grippers.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination, with the impression- 3 cylinder having grippers and throw-off fin- ,fence "to arrest the movement of the sheet,
gripper-fingers, and a shaft and bar and mechanism, substantially as set forth, for moving the gripper-bar and carrying the sheet to the delivery-table, substantially-as set fort-h.
3. The combination, with the delivery-belts and pulleys, of the lifting-bars, the rockershaft, the fence, the gripper-bar and grippers and mechanism for giving motion to the same, the switch for opening the grippers and then allowing them to close and seize the sheet, and the incline for opening the grippers and delivering the sheet, substantially as set forth.
