To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OHARLEs HENRY RUS- SELL, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 43 Bedford Row, London, in the countyofMiddlesex, gentleman, haveinventcd certain new and useful Improvements in Ap paratus for the Reception of Coin and the Automatic Delivery of Goods in Exchange Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in apparatus for the reception of coin and the automatic delivery of goods in exchange therefor.
The goods to be delivered are stored in a hopper contained in a compartment, beneath which hopper a delivery device is placed. The mechanism for actuating such delivery device is placed in an adjoining compartment, and is' actuated by pressing an external knob; but
the operation of the apparatus can only be effected after a coin or coins of proper denomination and value has or have been placed in a slit or aperture in the casing of the apparatus, which slit is connected by a chute or chutes with the mechanism. The coin or coins form a connection between or put in gear the parts of the mechanism, and pressure of the external knob will then deliver one article at a delivery-orifice. One coin may be used to operate the mechanism, or two coins; but for the purposes of this specification, for the sake of simplicity, I will speak of one coin. The articles contained in the apparatus may be cigarettes or cigars, or any small articles or packets.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan. Figs. 2*and 3 are vertical sections taken in or about the plane a b, Fig. 1 showing two alternative arrangements of mechanism. Figs. 4 and 5 are sections on line 0 d, Fig. 1 showing the delivery device in two positions; and Fig. 6, plan of part of Fig. 3.
The articles to be delivered are stored in the hopper A in a compartment adjoining that containing the mechanism, and at or near the base of the hopper A two movable flaps, a a, are hinged at a suitable angle. These two flaps a a do not meet at the center, and beneath them is placed a sliding block, B, resting upon a fixed frame, 0. In both these parts B and 0 slots or apertures b c are formed transversely, of a size suitable to admit of the passage of the articles. N ormally, the slots 72 and c coincide with each other, and the articles next to be delivered rest in them one above the other. The aperture 0 is normally closed, as in Fig. 4, by a plate, I), rigidly attached to and sliding synchronously withblock B. When block B is slid, as in Fig. 5, plate I) is withdrawn, and the lowest article is liberated and directed bya suitable guide, 0, to the delivery-aperture o The article next above it is carried along horizontally by block B upon the upper face of fixed frames 0, and on the return of the parts to normal position the article falls into aperture 0, taking the place of the article just delivered. The travel of slot b is determined by the stops b If, and its return to position is insured by spring d. Two projections, bb, are provided on block B, and at each motion of block B back and forth the flaps a a are raised and slightly agitate the articles in hopper A, thereby preventing bridging or jamming. Y
Sliding motion is imparted to block B by means of a lever, D, attached to the block at d and pivoted at its other end at d. This lever D is actuated by a push-bar, E, and is returned after operation by spring d By the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the coin is introduced at an aperture, e, formed in the casing e of the apparatus, and falls down an inclined plane, e", having an aperture, e in its under side, through which any coin other than that intended will fall. A second chute, e, is placed below e which guides the coin onto a balanced-tray, F, fixed on the end of a lever, f, centered on a bearing, f, and provided at its other end with a counterbalanceweight, f", to return it constantly to normal position. A rod, G, is pivoted on the lever f, and is capable of motion through a suitable guide. This rod G carries two arms, g g, which respectively engage with the pins h and j of the locking-pawls H and J. The pushbar E, working in suitable guides, extends to the exterior of the apparatus and terminates in a knob, a. Two stops,e e are placed upon push-bar E to regulate its travel, said stops being placed one on each side of the keeper or guide 6 with which'they engage. To prevent the operation of the apparatus without the introduction of the proper coin near the inner IOC end of push-bar E, a tooth, h, is formed, with which the locking-pawl H normally engages. Upon the back end of pawl H a tooth, h, is formed. A bent and weightedpiece, K, is arranged above and normally pressing its weight on pawl H, and a tooth or catch,k, is
also formed upon weighted piece K, for the purpose of looking with tooth h. When the pawl H and pin h are raised by arm g and rod G on the depression of tray F by the weight of the coin, the pawl H is lifted out of engagement with the bar E, which may then be operated.
To provide against any failure of pawl H or working parts in connection with it to lock and unlock the bar E, a second locking-pawl, J, suitably counterbalanced, is placed below the bar E. Upon this pawl J is fixed a pin, j, normally engaging with the lower arm, 9', of rod G, so that when the tray F is depressed by the weight of the coin, and arm 9 is raised, the pawl J is released and engages with a tooth, j, on the bar E, so that if from any cause-such as the coin sticking-the tray F should remain depressed, as in Fig. 2, the upper pawl, H, being at the time clear of tooth h on bar E, the'bar E remains locked by pawl J until the tray resumes its normal position; or, by the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the coin introduced at e falls down the chute e to the space where it is held vertically on edge by means of a guard-plate, m, and bent lever O, centered as shown at O, the lower part, 0, of the lever passing through the guard-plate m. This bent lever O is held firmly in position by a suitable spring, 0 Thepush-bar is divided into two parts, the outer part, E, car rying the externalknob, a, as before, and the inner part, M, terminating in a collar, m, engaging with the lever D, held in position by spring d. If one large coin be introduced, it fills the space L sufficiently to make connection between the parts E and M and complete the continuity of the bar; but if two smaller coins be introduced they are caused by the guard-plate m to stand vertically one upon the edge of the other.
The two adjacent ends of the parts E andM are formed crescent-shaped, or of such form that the two small coins in the position described will answer the same purpose as the one larger coin. A long pawl, N, having a suitably-curved breast, is centered in such position that its outer end rests normally upon the upper side of a projection, n, formed upon M. n. also acts as a stop, limiting the travel of M by taking against the frame at m. A guide-rod, n, Fig. 3, is fixed upon the projection n to keep the pawl M in position. The lower side of n is produced, as at n, and carries a bent rod, n, Fig. 6. On a coin being introduced and pressure applied to a, the coin is pressed forward by E and simultaneously presses forward M until a takes against m, as described, during which time the pawl N falls and engages with n, and the bent rod n takes against the lever O, withdrawing its end from o. The lever D is then pressed back .and one article delivered, as described. On
the pressurebeing removed from a, thespring a commences toreturn E to position, the part M' being held by the pawl Noduring sufiicient time to allow the coin to fall clear of the mechanism; but as E returns a pin, n, upon it travels along the curved breast of pawl N, which is thereby raised clear of n, allowing M to be returned to normal position by spring (1 acting upon lever D.
A plate, 6, may be provided for the purpose of diverting the coin to a money-drawer, O, placed beneath it.
In order to prevent coin being introduced when no more articles are contained in the apparatus, a cover-plate, P, is provided, which will cover the aperture 0 when the apparatus is empty. The movement of the cover-plate may be effected by any suitable mechanism.
In the figures, an arm, p, centered at p, is shown attached to P. A spring stud or projection, p, is fixed upon the moving bar E, and at each operation of the apparatus it engages with and rotates a ratchet-wheel, Q, for a distance of one tooth, a pawl being suitably arranged to prevent back action of Q. A pin, g, on Q engages at each complete revolution of Q with a tooth of the toothed rack R, moving it forward until an arm, 1, upon R clears the arm 1), attached to cover-plate P, which is at once drawn over the aperture 0 by the action of a spring, r.
The whole apparatus is inclosed in .a suitable cabinet or'casing provided with lid, lock, and key.
What I claim as my invention is- 1 1. The combination, with a closed cabinet or casing, of a hopper for containing articles of like size, a reciprocating cut-off block having an aperture below said hopper, a slide-bar actuating said block, pawls locking said slidebar, and a balance-tray throwing the pawls 011', said tray being located beneath a chute by which the coin is introduced, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a sliding block, B, having aperture 12, of the inclined parts a a above said block, projections b b on the block adjacent to the lower ends of the parts a a, piece 0, below the block, formed with aperture 0, and actuating-lever D, located to act on the block B, and having springs d, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus for the automatic delivery of articles, the combination, with a hopper, of a reciprocating cut-ofl' block having an aperture below said hopper, a slide-bar actuating said block, a pawl locking said slidebar, cover-plate P, arranged to move over the aper' ture 0, bar R, connected with said plate, and a ratchet-wheel, Q, intermediate of said. bar R and the slide-bar and engaging with said parts, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with a closed cabinet or casing containing a hopper for the storage of articles of like size, having inclined vibrating flaps at its base, of a reciprocating cut-ofl block having an aperture below the said hopper and provided with projections b b, actuating the said flaps at each reciprocation of the cut-off block, substantially as set forth.
5. The. combination, with a closed cabinet and a hopper for the storage of articles of like size, having inclined vibrating flaps at its base, and a reciprocating cut-off block with an aperture below the said hopper and provided with projections If If, of a slide-bar actuating said block and pawls locking the said slide-bar, all arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. The combination,with a sliding delivery device, a lever connected therewith, and a push-bar arranged to bear against said lever, of locking and releasing pawls H J, located to engage with said push-bar, a rod, G, having connection with said pawls, and a balancetray, F, connected with said bar, said balancetray adapted to overbalance by the weight of the coin and by its descent throw one lookingpawl, H, out of gear, and the other paw], J, into gear, but on its return to normal position to maintain both out of gear, substantially as described.
7. lhe combination, with a casing, a hopper with vibrating flaps and a sliding delivery device, of the divided push-bar E M, having its adjacent ends made of a crescent shape, so that an introduced coin or coins will form the necessary connection between the parts E M, substantially as herein set forth.
