Description

PATENT OFFICE,
JONATHAN WHITE, OF ANTRIM, NEW` HAMPSHIRE.
IIVIPROVED PPLEEPARERs Spceiiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,482, dated June 3, 1862.
.To a/ZZ whom itf may concern.- l Y Be it known that I, JONATHAN WHITE, a citizen of the United States of America, and
a resident of Antrim, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invvented a new and useful or Improved Machine Figure l is a top view, and Fig. 2 a side` elevation, of such machine.
In the drawings, A denotes a furcated apple mandrel or arbor as `supported by a vibratory frame or lever, B, in such manner as to be capable of being freely revolved by the action of a train of gears, a b c. The gear a is a spurgear fixed on the arbor or mandrel A and made to engage with the spur-gear b, which is attached to the side of a beveled gear, c, that works in a beveled sector, d. The two gears b c revolve freely on one journal, projecting from the frame B, and having a handle, C, ex tended from it.
The lever-frame Bplays on a center pin, d', by which the said frame is connected with a clamping-frame, D, which supports the beveled toothed sector d, this latter beingarranged on such frame D, as shown in the drawings. The frame D is provided with a clampingscrew, E, for fastening it to a table, and, furthermore, such frame supports a vibratory lever or arm, F, which at its lower end turns on a pin, e. This arm is drawn towardthe fork f of the mandrel A by means of a spring,
Y g, and carries on its upper end a knife stock or frame, G, which supports a knife, h, and turns freely in a horizontal direction on the arm F through the sector of circle of about one hundred and fifty degrees. Furthermore,
y a cam, i, and a stop, 1c, are arranged on and made to project from the frame B, as shown in the drawings.
In the operation of my said machine the frame B is to be movedfrom one end of the toothed sector to the other. This will impart to the applemandrel A a compound motionthat is, it will cause it not only to revolve on its axis, but to move around in the sector of a circle, and thereby impart such a motion to an apple when fixed on the prongs 0r fork of the arbor as will cause the knife to cut or remove its peel in a spiral extending from the stem to the eye of the apple, or thereabout. During retraction of the frame B the cam 'i will be brought against the arm F, and will move it so as to force the knife frame or holder against theG stop k, and thereby cause the said holder to be turned about on the arm, so as to stand at about a right angle to the mandrel. In this way the knife-holder will be properly set or adjusted, in order not only that an apple after having been pared may be removed from the fork of the mandrel, but another apple to be pared may be fixed thereon and the knife be in a proper position to commence the paring of it on the next forward movement of the frame B.
l I do not claim a furcated rotary shaft and a knife-stock so combined and arranged that while the shaft may be put in rotation the knife-stock may be moved around in or about in a Semicircular path, so as to press against an apple when xed on the shaft and effect the paring of such apple, such being the well-known way of making various, if not all, the other appleparers heretofore in use.
I claim-- My improved apple-paring machine, made substantially as described--viz., not only with its paring-tool h or the stock G thereof applied to a vibratory arm, F, (controlled by a spring or its equivalent,) and with its apple-mandrel A supported by a vibratory frame, B, but with a stationary toothed sector, d, and a train of gears, a I) c, and with a cam, fi, and stop 7c, the
whole being so as to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose as specified.
JONATHAN WHITE.
