CHARLES S. KERSHAW, OF SHERBURNE, NEW YORK.
SPOKE-SOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,792, dated December 21, 1886. Application tiled May 6, 1886. Serial No. 201,258 (No model.)
To all ivhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. KERsHAw,
. of Sherburne, in the county of Chenango, in
panyingdrawings, is a full, clear, and exact description. This invention consists in a novel construction of a clip and its application to the felly and outer end of the spoke, whereby the latter can be secured to the 'felly after the tenon of the spoke is broken, or the spoke can be tightened on the felly, so as to prevent the rattling thereof, all as hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a section of a vehicle-wheel provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof, taken ina plane parallel with that of the wheel; and Fig. 3 is a detached plan view of my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the felly, and B the spoke, of a vehicle-wheel. 0 represents a metal clip of the form of a washer, divided diametrically into two parts. The two sections of said clip are each formed with a semicircular excision, a, of approximately the same diameter as the tenon of the outer end of the spoke, and also formed with a segmental rib or flange, b, concentric with said excision, and with an extension, 0, beyond the said flange. This clip may be employed either for tightening a spoke on the felly, so as to prevent rattling, or for securing the spoke to the felly after the tenon of the former is broken. To accomplish this the two sections of the clip 0 are introduced between the inner side of the felly and adjacent abutting shoulder of the end of the spoke from opposite sides of the spoke and in line with the felly, so as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
The interposition of the described clip between the felly and adjacent abutting-shoulder of the spoke serves to take up the play between said parts and to tighten the same, so as to effectually prevent their rattling.
The flanges b 1) form a socket which in a great measure prevents the splitting of the spoke, and also to confine the spoke in its position after it has been deprived of the hold of its tenon.
Having described my invention,wl1at I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pat cut, isv I i The combination, with a felly and spoke, of a clip divided diametrically and the respective sections thereof introduced between the folly and adjacent shoulder of the spoke, and
provided with flanges embracing the end of the spoke, and with extensions secured to the felly at opposite sides of the spoke, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Sherburne,in the county of Ohenango, in the State of New York, this 17th day of April, 1886.
