BENJAMIN O.'FOSTER,*OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,779, dated December 21, 1886, Application filed September 2 1885. Serial No. 214,687. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN O. FOSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland, State of Ohio, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to suspenders; and it consists in the parts which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a pair of suspenders provided with my improvement Fig. 2 is an elevation of the rear piecewith shoulder-straps detached. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the pivotal arms and metallic loop with straps detached. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of one of the front pieces with the metallic loop and pivotal stud removed.
Like letters indicate like parts in the several views. The letters A A indicate the shoulder-straps. These straps meet and are united at the back, and terminate in a loop, A. Said loop engages a metallic loop, B.
O is a folded strap. The loop B is passedthrough the fold in the strap.
O D indicate an arm-piece provided near its middle with an opening, D, through which is secured a stud-button, E. The strap 0 straddles the upper side of the arm-piece D, and said strap is pivotally secured to the piece D by means of the stud or rivet button E. The shank of the button E passes through the opening D, and through openings in the strap 0. The outerends of the arms D are provided with rigid stud-buttons F.
H represents loop-straps. These straps are provided on each end with loops I I. The upper loops, I, are pivotally secured to the studs F on the outer ends of the arm-piece D. The
loops I I are preferably formed of cord. Said loops are rigidly united to the strap H by I means of the tapering folded metallic pieces J. Inwardly-proj ectin g spurs are formed from the metallic pieces J. These spurs engage the loop-cords I I and strap H.
- K is a grooved or flanged piece rigidly fixed t0 the under side of the front arm-piece, D. This flanged piece is intended, to receive an in dependent cord or strap suspended from the front stud, E. This strap should be provided with a bottom loop for engaging a button on the drawers. The pivotal connections E F of the ar1n-piece D are so arranged. that the said arm-piece may turn freely on the centralpiv- 'otal stud, E.
When there is a strain on either of the independent straps H, the pivotal connection permits the side of the arm D on which the strain occurs to be drawn downward, and the companion strap on the same arm is correspondingly elevated. When the pressure on the arm-studs is equal, the parts occupy the normal position, as shown in Fig. 2; but-when a strain occurs on any particular strap H its companion strap yields accordingly. By this arrangement a nice adjustment is'at all times automatically effected.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the bar provided with end studs and central downward projection,K, of the strap 0 and loop B, said strap be- 7 5 ing pivotally secured to the center of the bar, the loop aforesaid being engaged to said strap, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. An improved article of manufacture consisting of the bar D, having the studs F and projection K, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN O. FOSTER. I Witnesses:
J. W. BROWN, S. A. MONTIS.
