JASPER N. HAYES, OF DALLAS CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
BUTTER-Box.
TJPECEFICATON forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,415, dated December 14, 1886.
Application tiled April 20, 1886. Serial No. 199,467.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, JASPER N. HAYEs, a citi; zen of the United States, residing at' Dallas City, in the county of McKean, State of Penn- Sylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter-Boxes, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in. boxes to be used for storing butter, lard, te., and has for its objects to provide ventilation, as well as a stratum of air between the inner and outer walls of the box. These objects are attained by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specitication, in which- Figure l is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line a; x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. JA isa transverse sectional View.
The letter A indicates the tixed part of the top of the box, having alid, A, hinged to it by hinges a.. The lid A is provided with a fastening, B, which consists ot' a strip of sheet metal attached to the lid A by means of the screws b. This fastening Bis bent in a downward direction nearly parallel to the plane of the front side of the box, and is provided with a slot, C, of sufcient length to permit ot' the passage ot' a hook, E, which is attached to the front side, F, of the box and turns freely upon its axis, for a purpose hereinafter described.
G is the back side of the box, and H the bot toni.
I J K Lindicate the opposite sides and ends ofthe inner box, and M a narrow strip form-` ing the bottom of the air-space N below the piece A. r
M forms the bottom of an air-space, N, and
is secured to the under side of the lid A in (Model.)
such manner that when the lid A is down the spaces N N forni one continuous space.
O' and O are air-spaces at each end and at each side of the box, respectively.
The ends of the (outside) box F G have openings Q Q, which serve the purpose of handles, whereby the box may be more easily handled.
n n are openings in the end pieces, K L, of the inner box, and m m are openings in the bottom piece, M', ot the `air-space N', from which it can be seen that the air within the inside box can circulate freely, and in this manner be maintained pure and sweet and preserve the contents in a marketable condition.
NVhen the box is to be shut, the hook E should be placed in the position shown in Fig. 4; but when shut and fastened the hook should be turned to the position shown in Fig. 3.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secu re by Letters Patent, and claim, is-
1. A box having air Yspaces at each end, each side, and under the fixed portion of the top, the outer walls of said box at each end having openings to serve the purpose of handles and the inner walls being provided with openings u n m m, as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The box herein described, having airspaces N O O and openings Q Q and n a, in combination with lid A having air-space N and bottom piece, M, provided with openings m on, as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof AI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JASPER N. HAYES.
