SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,306, dated December 14, 1886.
Application filed April 16, 1886. Serial No. 199,081.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, CHARLES E. CooKERLY,
of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttoners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved buttoner in use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is an edge view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and convenient glove-buttoner which will firmly grasp the neck of the button and cover the head thereof, so that the button may be readily drawn through the button-hole.
My invention consists in two crossed levers provided at one end with eyes for receiving the thumb and finger, and at the opposite end with oppositely-arranged hooks for grasping the neck of the button; also, in the combina- 2 5 tion, with one of the levers, of a pivoted capplate for covering the button and the hooks, to prevent the. button from catching at the sides of the button-hole.
The crossed levers AA are pivoted together at their mid-length upon the screw or rivet a, and upon corresponding ends of each lever are formed eyes b, for receiving the thumb and finger for operating the buttoner; and upon the opposite ends of the levers there are oppositely'arranged hooks c, the points of the hooks of each lever A A being directed toward the hook of the opposite lever.
Upon theside of the lever A- is placed a cap, B, which is held loosely by the screw or rivet 0,62, and is provided with a rounded end reaching over the hook c of the lever A. The cap B has at the opposite end a thumb-piece, d, to which is secured a spring, 0, which presses on the outer surface of the lever A.

also reach over the edges of the lever A, as shown in Fig. 3, so that when the levers A A are turned to separate the hooks c the engagement of the lever A with the lipsfon the cap B will raise the rounded end of the cap B from the hook c of the lever A, so that the hook may be inserted under the head of the button, when the book 0 upon the lever A will be closed upon the shank of the button, thus clamping the shank between the hooks, and as the hooks are closed the lipsfofthe cap B slip down over the lever A, bringing the rounded end of the cap upon the top of the button. The buttoner may now be pulled through the button-hole, the cap B forming a guide and preventing-the button from catching in the button-hole. For economy in the manufacture, the lower lever may be left off entirely and the cap without change fastened to the remaining lever, thereby making a complete buttoner consisting of the cap and a single lever.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i '1. The combination, with the lever A, having the hook c, of the spring-acted cap B, as specified.
2. The combination, with the levers A A, pivoted to each other, provided with eyes b and with hooks c, oppositely arranged with respect to each other, of the springacted cap B, pivoted to the lever A and arranged to cover the hook of the lever, substantially as described.
3. As an improved article of manufacture,
a buttoner formed of levers A A, pivoted together, and provided with eyes I) b and hooks c, the cap B, provided with lips f, and the spring 6, substantially as herein shown and described.
