SPRING ATTACHMENT FOR CHAIRS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 11035 dated December 7. 1886. Original application filed July 30, 1880, Serial No. 14,470. Divided and this application filed March 23, 1885. Serial No. 160,520.

Be it known that we, M. DANIEL CONNOLLY and THOMAS A. CONNOLLY, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philapelphia and State of Pennsylvania, and the city of \Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tilting and Booking [0 Chairs, for which we made application for Letters Patent July 30, 1880, Serial No. 14,470, and of which the following is a divisional specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is I a front view, partly'in cross-section, of a chair havingits base and seat parts connected by one of our springs, the side edges of the boxes forming the rockers being parallel and meeting each other at a point about the diainetrical center of the spring; Fig. 2 the same, ex-

cept that the greater portion of both the seat and base part is omitted, and Fig. 3 the same as Fig. 2, exceptthat a part of the clamp is removed to show the central extension or straightened portion of the spring.

In the drawings we have shown our invention as applied to a revolving o'ffice-chairpro Vided with rockers secured to the under side of its seat part and a lower support therefor on its base part; and in these drawings A indie-ates the chair-seat; B, the base; E, the upper rockers; F, the lower support or rockers on which the upper rockers rest and move; G, the connectirig-spring; h, a securing clamp or 5 clip, and t inuts securing the ends of the sprlng.

The object of our invention is to provide a chair consisting of a. seat having rockers secured to its under side and a base having a lower support for said rockers with a connecting-spring having its longitudinal axis horizontal. this spring to have two coils formed from one continuous piece of wire, and constituting, substantially, two separate or inde- 4 5 pendent springs, and to be of sutficientstrength (No model.)

and tension to securely connect the base and seat parts together and hold the rockers in firm alignment with their support, so as to prevent said rockers from slipping backward or forward or sidewise thereon. 0

As shown in the drawings, the ends of the coils pass through one portion of the base part of the chair, being then secured by nuts, and the middle or extended part of the wire passes through a clamp or bracket, being thereby se- 5 cured to the seat part.

The coils of the spring may be in the same direction or oppositely.

We are aware of the Lamprecht patent of September 5, 1876; but our invention differs from the construction therein shown in that our spring constitutes the connection between the seat and base parts of the chair for holding the rockers and their support in alignment and proper relative position, in that our 6 spring is not wound around a bar or rod, and in that its straightened portion, instead of being made in the form of a square or U-shaped, extends directly across from one coil of the spring to the other.

IVe claim The combination, in a chair, of a seat having rockers secured to its under side, a base having a lower supportfor said rockers, and a connecting-spring having two coils formed 7 from one continuous piece of wire and separated by a straight portion thereof, such spring havingits longitudinal axis horizontal and being secured at its center to one part of the chair by a clamp and at its ends to another part of the chair by nuts, and constituting the connection between the seat and base parts of the chair for holding the rockers and their lower support in alignment and proper relative position, substantially as described.
