Description

NITE yarns ATENT Erice,
`AARON J. KLiNEANn LUoIUs N. MUIE, or JERSEY SHORE, rENNsYLvANIA.
iMPRovi-:o WASI-iiNe-lvi'AcHINF.;
" Specification lbrmingpart of Letters Patent No. 35,35., dated May 27, 1862.
To du whom/it mayconcer: l
`Be it vknown that we, AARON J. KLINE and LUoIUs N. Mum, ofJerse'yShoi-e, in the county of Lycoming and State of llennsylvania, have invented a newand useful Improvement in MTashing-Machines; 'and we do hereby declare that the following `is `a, full, clear, andv exact description of` Hthe construction and operation ofthe same, reference being hadv to the accompanying drawings, making-a partei this sp eciiication, invvhicl1- Figure lis aniend view or elevation; Fig. 2, alongitndinal vertical section as indicated by the line l 2 inFigl.
Like lettersin both iiguresfdesgnate corre- 4,spending parts, and parts that are not seen are shown in dotted-lines.
f The natureofonr improvement is in the construction*` of the machineryby which the rights screwed ontorthe outsides of the box,
and which support the' shaft, the cranks on the shaft necessarily producing an easyand rapid rocking motion to the washing-board, which is joined to the slotted arms, whenever motion is given tothe crank-handle on the end of the 4 shaft.` g
In the regulation of the pressure of the washingboard upon the clothes tobe washed, while one hand is engaged' on the crank-han- Y die` the other 'is-applied toa handle-rod at the end of the' bomprojeting suiiiciently above the top to beconveniently taken hold o f, extending down and. secnredfto a springlever which ex- `lends the entire diagonal length', and fastened at one eudfunderneath the box bya hinge'or hook. Two sliding bars, the top ends of which V"are eonnected'to the head or cross'piece `in the slotted uprghts" extending down below vthe box, are connected to the springlcverby "meansof `a rodlinked or `held to itrby a hook Y`Vox: staple in the center, passing 'transversely throughvihem, and securedv at theends by I nut-screws. The turning of the crankhandle with one hand and the application of the .other to the pressure-rod may be done simultaneously, at the discretion' of theV operator, with facility and ease. y
In order to enable any one skilled in the art to make'and use our invention, we wi1lproceed to describe its construction in detail.
A is' the washing-box, of a longitudinal forni, Y
resting on legs I," i
i D is a donbleleranked `iron shaft supported immediately above the ltop of the box in notched openings in tHe/sides of .the slotted uprights E, which are screwed onto th'e out- Sides of the box about midway, and projecting sufficiently above the top of the box snp-fV port the head or eross-pieceH in slots near the top of each, to which is suspended the slotted arms G and washingeboard. The cranks on the shaft passing through operate. in each of the slots.- y
F are sliding lbars placed on the outside of the box alongside of and tlushwithvthe out-- side faces of the slotted uprights E, 'being kept in their places by cleats d.` The tops are'connected to the head or cross-.piece H by'small brass or iron plates screwed on the insides and cut out to receive it. f V.
G is a spring-lever secured at one end underneath the box by a hinge or. hook of some kind. .At the other end is a handle-rod, b,
'projecting upward on the outside endof the' box, and which is keptsteady by two hooks or'staples being driven in. About midway and underneath the spring-lever Gais a trans verse rod, c, secured at each end to the sliding bars F, which project down sufficiently below the box, b'y nutscrews.
13g is a permanent washing-boardabout midway,v of the box, having a series of revolving rollers, every other one being stationary.
Around the slots on the inside of each of the arms C, or both sides, if deemed ngcessary, are thinbrass', or iron plates e, screwed on topro-` teet the woodfrom the friction occasioned by the revolution of the shaft D.V
-` j The double-crankedshaft D may be'entireiy I removed from the openings inthe slotted up-' rightsE by raising two small movable brass catches, f, which are screwed on to keep ib in lever G, the whole constructed and operated piacebeing slipped through theslotbed arms G. in the innnnor herein described and sei; forth.
'What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Paten@ si The arrangement and combination of the double cranked shaft; D, double-slotted :mns Witnesses:
C, double sliding bars F, double-slotted np- HUGH SHAW, rights E, head or cross-liee H, and spring- R. MCGOWAN.
