NITED STATES ATENT OFFIC DAVID B. WEIGHTMAN, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
INHALER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,613, dated November 30, 1886.
Application filed September 20,1886. Serial No. 214,084. (No model.)
To an whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID B. WE1G-HrMAN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kentand State of Michigan, have in vent-ed certain new and useful Improvementsin Inhalers;'and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de-' scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figurel is a plan View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 1 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 2 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 3 of Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My invention relates to that class of devices wherein a medicated sponge, or its equivalent, is employed, so arranged that the wearer may inhale the fumes from said sponge.
The object of my invention is to furnish an inhaler adapted to be worn upon the chin, to contain medicated ingredients, and so constructed that the volume of the fumes arising therefrom may be regulated at the will of the wearer.
I describe my invention as follows: I provide a cup or holder, preferably of spherical shape, made in two parts, which screw together, shown as A D. (See Fig. 2.) The top of the portion Ais cut away, and integral with said topis the sleeve 1), having slots \Vithin said sleeve is a slotted thimble, (I, having the flanging bottom 0, and fitting snugly, but capable.of being turned so that slots in the thimble and sleeve will register or will shut by closing the cup, or stand open at any intermediate point. A stop, h, prevents the thimble from turning more than the width of the slots 1 i. Telescoping within said thimble by a frictionjoint is the mouth-piece O, composed of the collar 6, the flaring rim f, and the reverse shield g. The top A is provided with the upright circular guard a, integral therewith, its purpose being to prevent any leakage from the cup by drainage in case the same should be upturned. In the hollow space below the thimble d is placed the medicated sponge E, or its equivalent. Said cup is also provided with the chin-piece B, having the strings la k for tying.
This appliance, as before stated, is intended to be worn upon the chin, and when in this position the air inhaled by the wearer will be constantly medicated from the sponge E, regulated in strength and volume by the extent to which the slots i are opened. From the construction shown and described it will be seen that the inhaler may be readily taken apart for cleansing or other purpose.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination ofthe parts A D, the sleeve b within and integral with said top A, and containing the slots'i i, with a thimble fitting snugly within said sleeve, aud having corresponding slots, the mouth-piece C, and chin-piece B, as shown and described.
2. In an inhaler, the parts A D, united by ascrew-joint and having a slotted sleeve integral with said top A, and the guard a, also integral with said top, in combination with the slotted thimble d, fitting closely in said sleeve and adapted to turn therein, thestoph, mouthpiece C, and chinpiece B, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signal urc in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID B. \VEIGHTMAN.
W itnesses:
ADOLPH 13. Mason, NVILLLIM A. CHAPMAN.
