UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. GUMMIN GS, OF SPENCER, MASSACHUSETTS.
WATER- FILTER.
ESPECIPICATION forrping part of Letters Patent No. 353,207, dated Novemesr'2 1386- 'scription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical central section through the body of the device and lower part of the valve or faucet, the line a, Fig. 2, indicating the position of the section, as will be hereinafter more fully described. Fig. 2 i
represents a rear view of the device with-the attachinghead removed to show the position of some of the internal parts and the general construction. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section, indicated by line b b, Fig. 2, with the holding-head in place, as will be hereinafter described. Fig. 4 represents a top or plan view of the faucet and faucet end of filter. Fig. 5 represents a portion of the section shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 represents a similar horizontal section taken on line 0 0 below the filteringbed, Fig. 1; and Fig. 7 represents atop or plan View of the filtering-beddetached, with portion of its filtering-covering broken away, and the rear end of the filtering-covering extended out, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
In the drawings, the part marked A is the bodyof the filter, and is made in circular form for convenience of finishing. The rear end, B, is provided with a screwthread, d, to receive the screwthread e on the attaching part 0, whereby shoulder 8 of the attaching part can be screwed up tight against shoulder 9 of rear part, B, of the filter-cylinder A, and this part 0 is provided with a screw-stem, C, by which the filter is to be attached to the watersupply pipe, and which attachment is usually accomplished by having a double screw-coupling, one end of which is screwed onto the water-pipe, and the other end screws on the screw-stem G, which has a hole, 0 for the passage of the water into the body of the filter. The hub part (3 of theattachingpart O is made in the form of a nut, six-sided being preferred.
011 each side of the lower half of the body of the filter are cast or otherwise formed flanges f f, and between these flanges the filteringgrate D is supported, the said grate being made of some suitable metal, preferably non-corrosive, and is provided with a series of holes, 9, and over said grate is placed a wire-netting, D, and over this netting is placed a filtering felt cloth, D, the rear end, D of which is turned down over the rear end, E, of filterchainber E, and where said filter-cloth is held in place by holding-plate F, screws h passing through said plate, filteringcloth, and into the head E, as fullyindicated in the drawings.
If preferred, fastening-plate F may be made to extend at its ends so as to fit the inner sides of the cylinder A, as indicated in dotted lines, Figs. 2 and 3.
The filtering-cloth D is turned over the side edges, k, of the grate D, so that when said grate and its wire-netting and filtering-cloth are run into place, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the desired and proper cover is produced for the chamber E, so that the water as it flows through theopening 0 must filter through the felting D in order to pass into the chamber E, from which it is to be drawn by means of the faucet G, when its stein G is turned to bring the outlet-hole Z in line with hole at in the front end, H, of filter-eylinder A.
The lower part of faucet-stem G is hollow, as shown at H, Figs. 1, 3, 5, and 6, and there is another outlet-hole, Z, in the stem G, which, when on line with the hole m in head II, will draw water from above the filtering felt cloth, and by this arrangement, when it is desired to draw filtered water, stem G is turnedto bring its outlet-hole Z on line with holem, and which is done by turning faucet-handle I until pin 1 strikes against stop-pin 1 but, when it is desired to clean the upper surface of filteringcloth D handle I is turned in the opposite direction until stop-pin I strikes against stoppin 1 when the water will rush over the upper surface of the filtercloth D ,out of hole at, and through the corresponding hole, Z, in stem G into discharge-hole H, and out at the bottom nozzle,
It will be understood that the outlet-hole Z in stem G, which lets the water into the stem from above the filtering-table, occupies the same relation to its st0p-pin I as does the outlet-holeltoits stoppinl. Thesaidoutlet-hole, which works in connection with the upper hole, m, in head H, is in the half of stem G that is cut away in Fig. 1.
The upper chamber, J, may be closed all but a narrow space, J, in which case the water as it is drawn off above the filter-cloth D" will perhaps clean off its upper surface in a more effectual manner.
In case the chamberJ is tobe closed a head, K, is provided with a bottom plate, K, and flanges a, cast on the sides of cylinder A and on the inside of head H, for supporting said division-plate K, and its head Kwill be found good practical devices. One side of the opening Hin faucctstem Gis of half circular form,
and the water as it passes out through openings or ports m m impinges against the flat sur face G, and as a result of such construction the water issues from the nozzle H in a solid and compact stream, and not in flying spray or foam, as otherwise would be the case if hole H were round or circular. Stem G in this instance is made tapering, and is ground to fit a corresponding hole in the front projecting part, A, of cylinder A.
The lower end, G of stem G is provided with a screw-thread, 0, to receive the female screw-thread p of the nozzle end H The up per end of nozzle H is grooved out, as shown at y, leaving a feather-edge, s, to come in contact with the plane surfacet of the lower end of the projection A. By this arrangement a good tightjoint is made, and that, too, in a manner not calculated to make the parts bind, while at the same time packing devices are rendered unnecessary. If the featheredge wears off, by simply filing a little off of the lower screw end, G, of stem G, nozzle H can be screwed up to make the edge 8 fit tight against the flat surface tof projection A. The projection to is made in the form of a nut, so that the nozzle H can be screwed on and off conveniently. The entire filter is simple in construction, and not liable to become clogged and to get out of order. The several parts can be easily separated when desired, and as easily put together again.
The action of the water as it passes through the filtering device down into the chamber is such as to agitate the water in chamber E, thereby keeping it pure.
Having described my improved Water-filter, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with cylinder A, provided with attaching end 0, and heads E and H, the latter having ports or holes m m, of chambers E J, filtering-grate D, and filteringcloth D supported in the sides of cylinder A, so as to bring the upper filtering surface thereof on a line with port m, and two-way faucet G G, provided with a flat water-impinging-surface, G upon its inside, as shown and described, said parts being constructed and arranged in relation to each other as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with cylinder A, provided with side fianges,ff, of head E, filteringgrate D, netting D, filtering-cloth D", and rear holding-plate, F, with its screws h h, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, with cylinder A and filteringeloth D supported on a level with the bottom of port m, of head K and bottom plate, K, substantially as described, whereby a wide but thin water-space, J, is produced, for the purposes stated.
