PICTURE OR MIRROR HANGING AID Filed April 12, 1968 [gm N INVENTOR 5 1 5". My: K MO/F/TT United States Patent 3,530,591 PICTURE 0R MIRROR HANGING AID Wayne V. Moflitt, Hillsborough, Calif. (520 NE. Ione, Camas, Wash. 98607) Filed Apr. 12, 1968, Ser. No. 720,929 Int. Cl. G01b 3/30 US. Cl. 33-180 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention is used in hanging pictures which are to be hung from a hook or the like secured to a wall at the back of the picture. With my invention the picture can be held in the exact position that it is to hang and my aid used to determine the exact position on the wall to place the hook or hooks. This invention consists of a rectangular board having a rectangular opening in the longitudinal center thereof near the top of the board for the purpose of holding the board against a wall. The board is provided with a horizontal line extending completely across the front of the board and connecting to lines extending across the ends of the board, a portion of a vertical center line is on the front of the board and hooks are provided for securement to the board at suitable points along the horizontal line.
This, invention relates to interior decorating; more particularly, to that branch of interior decorating that deals with the hanging of pictures and mirrors; still more particularly to a device in the form of a hanging aid to be used for properly locating a picture or mirror on a wall or the like.
It is the principal object of this invention to provide a picture or mirror hanging aid that removes the guesswork or trial and error method of determining the proper and exact location of the point at which the picture or mirror hanging hook-nail is to be driven into the wall.
Another object of this invention is to provide a picture or mirror hanging aid of the character herein described that can be used by anyone for hanging a picture or mirror on a wall regardless of ones lack of experience in this art.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a picture or mirror hanging aid of the character described that reduces the time normally required to find the correct location for hanging a picture or mirror on a wall and also reduces the danger of marking a wall unnecessarily when hanging a picture or mirror.
Other and further objects and advantages of this invention will no doubt appear as the reading of this specification proceeds and the accompanying drawing is examined.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a pictorial view of this use.
FIG. 2 is a bottom view of the board of FIG. 1.
In the two views of this invention, like parts are indicated by like reference numbers.
The reference number 5 indicates this invention in its entirety.
The invention consists of a rectangular board 6 having a rectangular opening 7 in the longitudinal center and near the top 8 in order to provide means of picking up and holding the aforesaid board 6 when using this invention, as will now be described.
Locate and mark the exact top center of the picture or mirror that is to be hung. It is desirable to make this mark, and all future markings, on masking tape. Now select the nail 9 and the proper size picture hanging hook invention in actual 3,530,591 Patented Sept. 29, 1970 10, and nail the hook at 11 on the horizontally disposed line 12 which extends across the aforesaid board 6. Nail the second hook 13 at point 14. Hang or hold the board 6 by means of the rectangular opening 7 and then hang the picture squarely on the two aforesaid hooks 10 and 13. On the left and right edges of the board at points corresponding to point 15, mark a line across the aforesaid edges of the board 6 at the exact top of the picture. One of these lines terminates at 16. Remove the picture from the board and hold the picture flat against the wall in the position that the picture is to be hung. Place a strip of masking tape on the wall along the upper edge of the picture. Mark on this tape a center mark at the center of the upper edge of the picture. Draw a line on the tape along the upper edge of the picture and extending on each side of the center mark. Remove the picture and place the board 6 against the wall with the top horizontal, with the end 16 of the line on the edge of the board in contact with the line on the tape and with the board centered with respect to the center mark. Now make a mark on the wall at each end of line 12 of board 6. Remove the board from the wall and secure a hook to the wall at the same distance from each of these last mentioned marks as the hooks 10 and 13 are from the edge of board 6. The tape can now be removed from the wall and the marks at the upper edge of the picture location will be removed with the tape. The picture can be hung on the hooks and will be at the exact location that was selected.
If a single hook is to be used, the procedure is the same, except that a single hook is secured to board 6 between hooks 10 and 13 and the picture is hung on this hook before making line 15-16. Instead of securing two hooks to the wall, a single hook is so secured at a point midway between the two marks on the wall.
From the foregoing it is seen that I have herein provided a new and useful picture or mirror hanging aid that meets all of the objects of this invention.
This invention is subject to any and all changes one may care to make in so long as the changes fall within the scope and intent of the appended claims. The board and picture hanging hooks may be of any desired size and material.
What I now claim as new is:
1. A picture or mirror hanging aid of the character described comprising a board having means near the center of the upper edge for holding the same against a wall on which a picture is to be hung, two lines on the front of said board, one line being a center line extending in a vertical direction below the means and the other line extending across the board at right angles to the center line, the horizontal line extending across each end of the board, one or more picture hanging hooks secured to the board at points along said horizontal line.
2. The invention of claim 1 wherein the said board is rectangular in shape, and the holding means is in the form of a rectangular opening in the said board.
