-POLE TIP.
No. 352,978. Patented Nov. 23, 1886.
y B D Illl UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIfiE.
MILO 11. Morr, or JAMESIOWN, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
POLE-TlPl SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,978, dated November 23, 1886.
Application filed July 19, 1886. Serial No. 208,437. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILO H. MOTT, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Stutsman and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pole-Tips; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bein'ghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. The invention will first be describedin con nection with the drawings, and then clearly pointed outin the claim.
Figure l of the drawings is a side elevation, showing a pole-tip provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the latch. In the drawings, A represents the pole of a vehicle, and B the tip, the latter having a cavity, 1/, in which are located the latch C and spring D, while E is a holdback, made preferably integralwith the tip B. My spring D is fastened at one end to the front of the latch O, which is notched at c, and diagonallyop.
posite thereto provided with a lip, 0 whereby it is retained firmly in position at all times.
The latch has its end 0 made round to work pole-tips, which are described and shown in Patents Nos. 826,379 and-192,159,- where the strength and successful operation depend upon .the pivot In practice this pivot is found to .rust, cramp, and break, while the latch is allowed to fall out, and, being at all times loose, to make a rattling noise. In order to remove these objections, I form the round end 0 to turn in the socket b, thus .dispensing entirely with a pivot. Then. I make the lip c to bear upon the inside of the tip, so that the latch is always held down firmly upon the tip, cannot work about or rattle, and is not liable under any circumstances to fall out.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
A pole tip, B, having the cavity 1; and socket b?, in combination with the latch O, having notch c, lip 0?, rounded end ciand a'spring bearing on said end oiwhereby a pivot is not needed, the rounded end 0 being held directly by the spring, and a broad bearing for the latch on the shell of tip being provided as well at the rear as at the front of said latch, as shown and described. v
In testimony whereof I- affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MILO n: MOTT.
