ISACKAGE OF TO|LETPAPER.
PATENT OFFICE.
A SPECIFICATIO forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,951, dated November 23, 1886.
Application filed october 2s, i885.
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of lthis specification, and
to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
M-ypresentinvention relates to an improvement upon that for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted me on the 1st day of September, 1885, No. 325,410; and it Consists in an improved form of bundle con structed tol permit of the more ready separation of the sheets of paper, as will be described hereinafter.
In my prior patent referred to the bundle of paper employed consisted of one or more lengths of thin paper wound in the form of a continuous band, and havingits ends parallel to each other, so as to produce sheets of equal width from end to end; but in my present invention I so form the bundle'as that when compressed or attened its ends shall converge toward one or both sides, which convergence has the effect of producing sheets narrowed at one end, or both, the narrow portions being weaker and offering less resistance tlfan the ywider portions, and constituting points at l which to readily separate the sheets.
In the accompanying drawings I haveillustrated my improved form of bundle. v
Figure l shows the mode of tearing off .the sheets.` Fig. 2 is a side View of one of the bundles; Fig. 3, a View of a modification, andy Fig. 4 is a view showing the manner of cutting the large roll of paper so as to form thev small bundles.
In the manufacture of these bundles I preferably wind a Continuous web of paper of full Width upon a mandrel ofsuitable size, with or Serial No. 181,189. (No model.)
core a, and when the band has attained a sufficient thickness remove it from the mandrel, Hatten it into the oval or oblong shape shown in the drawings, and cut it on the dotted lines shown in Fig. Lproducing a bundle of paper of convenient size, with one of its sides narrower than the other, as shown. The sheets can now be separated from the roll by the operators holding the paper in his left hand, with the smaller end uppermost, as indicated in the drawings, and tearing off a sheet; the separation taking place at thetop of the band. As soon as a sheet is separated the end of the next will drop down and hang in convenient position to be in turn grasped and severed.
In Fig. 3 is shown a modified form of roll tapering toward both sides, which can be emin the other gures. The sheets removed are intended to be doubled, and are of a shape more convenient than rectangular sheets. Breadth at one end only is requisite, and the narrowing of the other end, while of no disadvantage, effects an economy in paper. This form of bundle may be mounted in a fixture such as 17, 1885, Serial No. 171,895, or it may be used detached from a xture, as described.
without the interposition of the thick paper ployed, if desired; but I prefer the one shown shown in my application for patent iiled July I do not desire to claim herein, broadly, a
roll of paper weakened at one or more points, as- I have made that invention the subjectlmatter of another application filed by by me on the 17th day of July, 1885, Serial No. 171,894.
I claim as my invention- As a new article of manufacture, a roll of toilet-paper having converging ends, substantially as described.
