Be it known that L'MATTHIAS BROCK, of Boston,county of Suffolk, and State of Massa- `chusetts, have inventedan Improvement in Machine, for Preparing Vamps for Lasting, of whichthe following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, isa specifi tion', like letters on the drawings representing liker parts.
-When applying the upper to a last in that step of manufacturing boots and shoes called lasting it is necessary, in order'to do good work, that the toe of the upper be drawn smoothly about and fitted snugly to the toe of the last, and that the edges of the'upper folded about the toe and under the bottom of the last be slitted, so that one part may somewhat overlap the other and avoid plaits in the up-f per next the bottom of the last.
I have provided and shall hereinafter describe a machine for clamping the edgesof the upper about the toe and outside of but independently of the toe of the last while the latter is being fitted intothe upper, the machine also slitting the edges of the upper about its toe part preparatory to turning the said edges over upon the bottom of the last, as will be described. y f
In my improved machine the upper of the boot or shoe to be lasted is clamped at and about its toe part and held while a presser, acting upon the bottom of the last provided with an inner sole, is crowded down into the upper, the latter being thereby stretched, and vthe stretching having been completed, or substantially so, theedge of the vamp about the toe is slitted, and, if desired, when slitting the edge of the upper, a portion of the material may be cut out, leaving a notch more or Vless V-Shaped. The frame-work A, of suitable shapeto support the working parts, has pivoted upon it by a suitable bolt or pivot, A, an arm, A2, which at its forward end-has pivoted to it, as at a, the upper ends of two links, B, shown as slotted at their lower ends, (see Fig. 1,) to embrace suitable pins or projections, b, extended from'a lever, B, having its fulcrum at B2, the l said lever being forked at its pivoted end to embrace a hub or bearing-piece, B3, forming a rigidv part of the frame-work;

l) has connected to it a link, B4, which in practice will be jointed to asuitable treadle at the floor under the bench or table upon which the base of the `frame-work A isk mounted, the Said treadle being acted upon by a suitable spring or weight, which will normally keep the treadle and the lever B elevated.
Fig. l shows the lever B as fully depressed, thedifferent parts of the machine being in the position that they will occupy when the upper has been stretched `and slitted.` The movement of the lever B raises and lowers the arm A2. This ar'in, at its front end, receives the shank D of the presser-foot d,which is to act`upon thebottom of the last or inner sole thereon, and press it snugly down into the upper,while the said upper is held by the jaws, to be described, the said shank being surrounded by a spiral spring, d', the upper end of which abuts against a shoulder, dz, (see Fig. 2,) at the front end of the arm A2, the shank of the said presser being free to slide vup through the hole in the said arm whenever, in the descent of the varm A, the foot d meets the inner sole on the last, it then acting to press the last into theupper of the boot or shoe.
The upper of the boot or shoe is opened out, and has its toe portion with the inner side of the upper uppermost placed between thel f jaws h h. The outer face of the upper is laid upon the rest di which is preferably a piece or strip of rawhide laid upon and forming`the surface of the bed-plate d5.
The arm A2 has pivoted to it by the pivotbeing adjusted about their common pivot e', by screws es and e4, in slots made in thesaid arm A2, as shown in Fig. 3. These holders,`
provided with segmental grooves, receive in them the blade or knife carrying blockse e, the said blocks being secured in place by screws 2 2. The blades or knives c (see Figs. l and 2, full lines, and in Fig. 5 by dotted lines) are secured in radial slots ofthe said blocks by screws c?, passed into diagonal holes, (see Fig. 6,) the said screws inipinging against the shanks of the blades or knives after they have been placed in the said slots, the slots preferably occupying, as shown, radial positions with relation to th'e center of the curve represented by the curve of the last. l These blades cut through the vamps and upon the rawhide d4, referred to, when slitting or cutting the Vamps. The eXtra movement of the arm A2, after the foot d has been arrested, as described, enables the upper to be held iirnily, while the arln A continues its descent to place the blades or cutters in contact with and to cut through the upper while held by the jaws h h. ` `lower jaw, back of the pivot h3, has suitable ears, 3, to receive a pin, 4, which serves as a fulcruln for thejaw-closing lever m, having a curved or cam-shaped' end, as m, to act upon a roller, m2, mounted upon a pin, m3, inserted through two ears, m4 m4, forming part of or connected to the plate ht, the said surface, by its contact with the said roll, causing the jaw h to grasp the upper between it and the lower j aw; but in caseof variations in the thickness of the upper, which would do injury, the spring 71,1 permits the plate h4 to yield to a limited extent.

The lever A2 and its attached yielding presser or foot d and holders e e2, with the 4o segmental blocks e5 e, adjustable in the said holders and slotted for the reception of the knives or blades to slit or cut the upper, substantially as described.
6. The lever Ay and theholders e e, pivoted 45 thereon, as described, combined with the blocks e5 e", slotted as described, and with the blades or l knives therein made adjustable in the direction of their Width or longitudinally inthe said slots or toward and from the toe of the 5o last, to adapt the blades to lasts of different size or curvature, substantially asl described.
