Description

(No Model.)
J. A. BALL.-
' PLOW.
Patented Nov.
WH'FESEFEE.
UNITED [STAT-Es JOHN A. BALL, OF GRASS VALLEY, CALIFORNIA.
"fPLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,849, dated November 16, 1886.
Application filed September 15, 1884. Serial No. 143,103. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, J OHN A. BALL, of Grass Valley, county of Nevada, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Plows, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to that class of plows known as reversible, and has for its object the production of a reversible plow in which the mold-board is made concaved and so piv-' oted as to be readily turned, so that its'concaved side will occupy a like position at either side of the beam at will, thesaid mold-board having attached to or forming a part of it a lay or share which is double pointed. The mold-board herein shown is mounted to turn on a vertical pivot, and I have provideda locking device, which, when moved to release the mold-board, the plow being moved forward in the land, will be automatically shifted to reverse the throwing of the sod, and the action will be the same, no matter whether the moldboard is at the right or at the left hand sideof the beam.
Figure l in side elevation represents a plow embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a top or plan view of Fig. 1, the dotted line showing the mold-board reversed. Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. l on the dotted line arm. Fig. 4 is a top View of the mold-board and its attached lay or share. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the mold-board just above the lower guide-eye; and Fig. 6 is a section of Fig. on the line a." so.
The beam A and the handles B are and may be of any usual construction. The beam has bolted to its under side a suitable bearing, 0.
A bolt, D, is entered, as shown, from below,
up through a shoe, E, thence through the eyes upper and lower edges, and at the center of its length, and at or near its ends the said moldboard has two other eyes, 6 7 ,which form part of the mold-board locking device, to be de-' I f r.
FFICE. 7
full lines is supposed to be ready to cut and 7 turn a-right-hand furrow, but by turning the mold-board and its attached parts into the dotted-line position the furrow will be turned to the left, which provision it is obvious will enable the furrows to be laid in the same general direction in the movement of the plow back and forth. I
To hold the mold-board in place I have provided a locking device (shown as a hand-lever, H,) pivoted at 10 on an ear of the bearing G, the said handle-lever having suitable prongs, h, one for each of the eyes 6 7 of the moldboard. A
In Figs. 1 and 2 the eye 7 is entered to hold the mold-board, as-in full lines. To reverse the mold-board it is only necessary to lift the hand-lever H and remove the prong h from the eye engaged by it, and thereafter any forward movement of the plow, accompanied by a slight side tip toward the land side will, through the pressure of the land against the then forwardpoint, cause the mold-board to turn .on its verticalv pivot, thus reversing the latter, and properly reversed the handle will be dropped to enable the prong h next the then rear end of the mold-board to enter the eye nearest it, to thus lock the mold-board in place until it is again desired to reverse the same.
The shoe E has substantially straight sides, and is of such width that one or the other side may follow in the line of and form a practical continuation of the landside from the point of the plow.
It will be noticed that the point of the lay" or share of my improved mold-board is so shaped and constructed as to always occupy a position at one side of the center of the beam, to thus equalize the draft.
I claim- I 1. The plow-beam A and its attached bearing 0, combined with the shoe E, having a its center which encircle the sleeve and eyes 6 and 7, as described, and the hand'lever pivoted to the said bearing and provided with the prongs h, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN A. BALL. Witnesses:
