SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,782, dated November 16, 1886.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is. a longitudinal section of part of a car, showing my improvements; and Fig. 2 is a sectional I plan view of the mechanism, showing the frame of the car in dotted lines.
A is the body of the car, constructed in the usual manner; B, the front axle, and D the rear axle, having the usual wheels.
On the axleB is a ratchet-wheel, E, and on an adjacent shaft, F, having its bearings in boxes ff on the frame above, is a ratchetwheel, G. secured to the frame of the car has an arm, 8, which has a T-head resting on the upper face of the springs P, and attached also to this rock-shaft S is an arm, 8, connected to a lever, T, by a link or rod, 8 This lever T is pivoted, in the present instance, to the shaft F, but may be attached to any portion of the car. The outer end of this lever-is connected to an upright rod, U, having a head, at, and passing through a casing, t, in the floor of the car. Between the lower portion of the casing and the head a is a spiral spring, By pressing the foot on the head a the rock-shaft S is turned through the lever T, link 8 and arm 5 P P. The pawl-arms M M are thus allowed to fall and engage with the teeth of the ratch et-wheel E on the axle B. When the foot is released, the springs P P lift the pawl-arms M M back again to their normal position in gear with the ratchetwheel G.
When it is desired to apply the brakes, the lever J is moved backward and forward, so that the pawls onthe arms M M engage with the ratchet-wheel G and alternately turn it partially around to wind up the brake-chain When it is desired to start the car, the rod U is depressed to free the pawls from engagement with the ratchet-wheel G, and so release the brakes, and also to allow the pawls to engage with the ratchet-wheel E on the axle, so that t by then moving the lever J forward and backward the axle is turned to assist in starting the car. When the car has been fairly started, 8 5 the foot is taken off the rod U, and the arms M M consequently lifted out of gear with the drum E and into gear with the drum'G. By the use'of two pawl-levers, M M, instead of one, the ratchet-wheels are operated at both the forward and'backward movement of the hand-lever J; but one pawl-lever may be used without departing from my invention.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the brake-chain .drum of a car and ratchetwheel with the caraxlehavi'ng a starting'ratchet-wheel, pawls to engage with either ratchet-wheel, a lever to reciprocate the pawls, and devices for throwing the arms or pawls into or out of gear with either of the ratchet-wheels, substantially'as set forth.
2. The combination of the car-axle having a ratchet-wheel and the brake mechanisms with a ratchet-wheel controlling the brake mechanism, and a lever, J, having two pawlarms, M M, pivoted one below and one above the fulcrum of the lever, and adapted to engage with either ratchet-wheel.
3. The combination of the car-axle having a ratchet-wheel, E, the brakeoperating ratchetwheel G, a pawl to engage with either of the ratchet-wheels, with a lever to operate the pawl, and a spring, P, adapted to hold the pawl in gear with the brake ratchet-wheel G, and devices under the control of the operator for depressing the spring and allowing the
