SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,761. dated November 16, 1886.
Application filed April 20, 1886.' Serial No. 199,457. (No model.)
To all whom it may concerm' Be it known that I, ERNEsT EMIL KRENGEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Buena Vista, in the county of Polk and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar- Axles; and'I doi hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilledin the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specilication, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view. of as much of a car-axle as will show .my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical Sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the parts of the axle separated.

My invention has relation to that classof axles for railway-cars in which two halves of an axle arejournaled at their` inner1 ends in a box for the purpose of admitting of one wheel running at a speed different from the other. as in passing curves and similar places; and

' In the accompauying drawings, the letters A A indicate the two halves of the axle, whichare formed with, enlarged heads B, or collars, at their inner V ends, having the facing sides rounded. ,The inner ends of the axlehalves are journaled in a Vsleeve, O, the middle portion, D, of Which is greater in diameter, and formed With thicker walls, than the ends, for theI purpose Aof strengtheniug the sleeve at its middle; and this enlarged central portion of the sleeve is formed with grooves or channels E E, having perforations F into the axial bore of the sleeve. A cylindrical box, G, surrounds the sleeve,A
and fits snugly upon the swelled portion of` 'the same, and one .side of this box is provided with an oil-aperture having a neck, H, provided with a screw-cap, I, through which neck and aperture the box may be filled with oil, the heads of the box having apertures in their centers slightly larger than the bore of the sleeve and hearing snugly against the ends of the sleeve, having washers J interposed between them and the ends of the sleeve. Two sleeves or boxings, K K, fit upon the axlehalves and within the ends of the sleeve, bearing with'their inner ends against the collars upon the axle-halves, and the flanges or col-- lars L upon the outer ends of the boxings are secured to the ends of the sleeve by means of screw-bolts M. It will thus be seen that the boxings Will confine the axle-halves within the sleeve, while they may revolve within the sleeve and boxings independently of each other, allowing one wheel to run ata speed different from the speed of the other wheel;
and the halves of the/axle may very easily be v taken apart by simply removing the fasteningbolts iu the flanges of the boxings, when the boxings and the axle halves may be drawn out of 'the ends of the Sleeve.
The outer cylindrical casiug or box serves as a reservoir for oil, which may be filled into the casing through the neck and' aperture at the middle of the casing, and, after closing the aperture by the screw-cap, the oil contained .in the casing may be distributed through the grooves and apertures inv the sleeve to the axle-halves within the sleeve,lubricating them, and the washers at the ends of the sleeve between the said ends-and the apertured heads of the outer casing will prevent auy'of the oil from passing out at the ends of the casing.
VThe longitudinal grooves in the enlarged I central portion of the sleeve will allow the oil to pass to both ends of the sleeve and will guide the flow of the oil to the oiling perforarations in the sleeve, and a sufficient quantity of oil may be filled into the casiug to lubricate the axle-halves sufficiently for the motion required of them for a considerable length of time.
Having thus described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- .e
The combination of the divided car-axle, the fianged boxings, the centrally-enlarged, grooved, and perforated sleeve, the washers, and the outer oasing provided with an `oilaperture and serving as an oil-reservoir, substantially as shown and described.
