Description

Sept. 8, 1970 J. PICANOL PICKERS FOR PICKING STICK IN LOOMS Filed March 8, 1968 INVENTOR. J. PL ::can ol BY f A`|`+orLNGs5 United States Patent O 1nt. c. D03d49/36, 49/38 us. c. 139--159 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A loom is provided with a picker made of a material having a good resistance and a damping devce interposed between the picker and the adjoining portion of the picking stick and a guiding means are provided for the picking stick.
1 Claim Due to the increase of the performances of the looms, the picking device is more and more stressed.
In order to protect the portion directly stressed of the picking sticks, that portion has been provided with a picker and different configurations and materals have already been used for realizing such pickers.
Generally, only the portion of the picking stck directly stressed has been reinforced while taking the impact stresses into account.
An object of this invention is to combine (a) the proper picker made of a material having a good resstance (b) a clamping device interposed between the said picker and the adjoiuing portion of the picking stick and (c) a postive guiding means for the latter.
Another object of this invention is to provide such a picker made of a suitable material, e.g. low pressure and high density polyethylene internally shaped to allow the engagement of both the corresponding port on of the picking stick and cushions of a material substantally more resilient than the picker and the picking stick.
Another object of this invention is to impart a substantial length to the said picker so that the contact surface with the flexible damping device, on one hand, and the reaction surface between the said picker and the adjoining back portion of the picking stick, on the other hand, are relatively extended to reduce the specc pressures as much as possible.
Another object of the invention is to realize the said picker in combination with a very simple fastening means, namely a single cross-pin so that not only the mountng, but principally the dismantling and the replacement of the proper picker may be made very rapidly without any drawback and without dismantling the correlatve parts of the loom.
Finally, another object of the invention relates to the particular shape of the internal surfaces of the picker outlinng the recess traversing it longitudinall y through and through so that, by the said simple fastenng means, the picker and its resilient darnping device are firmly secured in correct position.
These characteristims may be incorporated in very different shapes rationally adapted for each use.
Thus, it is only by way of example and without any limitation that an embodiment is described hereafter with reference to the enclosed drawings in which:
FIG. 1 shows diagrammatically a longitudinal section of the constituting elements of an improved picker according to the invention;
FIG. 2 shows a front view with a partial section of a practical embodiment using the elements shown in FIG. 1;
FIGS. 3, 4 and 5 are sections respectively on the lines III-UL IV-IV, and V-V of FIG. 2;
FIG. 6 shows a perspective view of the picker, the
adjoining end of the picking stick and the positive guiding device.
FIG. 1 shows as diagrammatically as possible the upper end of picking stick 1, the proper picker 2 which is a kind of sheath in suitable material, generally a molding plastic material and, between the said picker 2 and the corresponding front portion of the picking stick 1, a clamping device 3 forned of a thickness of a material having a higher elasticity than that of the materials used respectively for the picking stick 1 and the picker 2. In its upper front portion, the latter has a notch 4 the shape, the dimensions and the orientation of which are determined by the configuration of the terminal ends of the shuttle of the loom in question.
The practical embodiment shown in FIGS. 2 to 6 comprses also the upper terminal portion 1 of the picking stick, the picker 2 and the intermediate damping device 3. The terminal portion 1 of the picking stick comprises, from its upper end, a notch 5 formed by a straight portion parallel or approximately parallel to the longitudinal edges of the picking stick projected by a curved portion.
At a lower level and upon its front face 6, the picking stick has a semi-cylindrical slot 7. The picker 2, e.g. made of polyethylene, has a particular profile such as that illustrated in F IG. 2.
In its upper portion, this picker having the shape of a profiled sheath has a recess 8 opposite to the said cutout 5 of the picking stick and defining a chamber 9 with a restricted inlet 10. In this way, a resilient cushion 3 forming a clamping device is enclosed in this chamber. At a lower level, this picker has also a semicylindrical slot 11 disposed in front of the slot 7 to form a cylindrical passage with which is engaged a pin 12 forming the single interconnecting element between the different elements combined in this manner.
FIG. 6 shows the upper portion of the picking stick provided with its characteristic picker and this figure shows diagrammatically, in 13, the positive guiding device for the upper portion of the picking stick or the picker.
It will be observed that, owing to the relative shape and dimensions of the picker with respect to the picking stick, a relatively substantial reaction surface 14 is obtained.
It is of course apparent that the dilferent constituting portions of the improved picker according to the invention may be modified in their shapes and dimensions according to the intended use.
As generally as possible, the invention concerns the different above described characteristics considered individually or in any combination.
What I claim is:
1. In a shuttle loom, a picking stick having a top with a rear corner portion, a sheath-like picker member having a longitudinal passage therethrough receiving the upper end of the picking stick, said picker member having a laterally projecting shuttle engaging surface at one end thereof and tapering off across said passage toward said surface and a recess communicating with said passage and located at the back of the shuttle engaging surface, said picking stick having a corresponding recess at the top thereof, said recesses facing each other, a shaped References Cited UNITED STATES PATENTS Urquhart et al. 139-159 Lacey et al. 139-159 10 Horsfall 139-159 Scholz 139-157 X Chandler t 139-159 4 2,167,830 8/1939 Foehr 139-159 2,440,182 4/ 1948 Muller 139-159 3,116,763 1/1964 Nill 139-159 FOREIGN PATENTS 686,571 1/ 1940 Germany.
