Description

"6. TAiNTER.
` Damper, Naf-35,269. i Patented May 13,l 18612,.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE TAINTEE, or wATERTowN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN VENTILATlNG-DAM PERS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,269, dated May 13, 1862.
'To all whom; it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE TAINTER, of Vatertown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Vcntilating-Dampcr :for Stoves and Furnaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical central section of my invention, taken in the line x fr, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in thetwo figures.
This invention consists in the employment or use of a hinged conical damper and venti lating-register constructed an d applied to the iiue or pipe of a ystove or furnace in such a manner that the damper will be opened and closed or adjusted simultaneously with the adjustment of the register and a superior ventilating attachment attained.
To enable those skilled in the art to t'ully understan d and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the pipe or flue of a stove or furnace, andB isa band which encompasses it and is allowed to turn 'freely thereon. This band B has two or Inore openings, a, made in i t, and similar openings, I?, are made in the part damper C is connected with the band or register B by means of a rod, D, which passes through oblong circumferential slots e in the flue A and through the slots f in the two parts c c of the damper, the ends ot said rod being secured in the band, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
The relative position of the rod D and slots f of the damper with the openings a b of the band Band flue A is such that when the' ted into the Hue A the draft of the stove will` be proportionally checked and the draft increased asthe openings o are closed. By this arrangement a room may be ventilated in the most expeditious and perfect manner.
The damper is shown in an open state by the red lines, and it will be understood that when the damper is closed the small opening d' at its top will admit .of the escape of gases up :into the :tl ue A.
I do not claim the admitting ot external air into the pipe or flue of a stove, for that has been previously done for the purpose of ventilating apartments; but
I do claim as new and desire to secure by `Letters Patent- The combination of the conical damper C and band or Ventilating-register B, connected together and applied to the flue or pipe for joint operation, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
EORGE TAINTER.
