CORN-DRILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,586, dated November 16, 1886.

To aZZ whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, HORACE G. Sworn,a citizen of the United States, residing at Liberty, in the county of Union and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Drills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates t) that class of corndrills known as double-row drills, and wherein the widths of the furrows can be changed, as desired; and it has for its object improvements in construction as well as increased efficiency of this class of machines.
The novelty of my invention will be herein set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Inthe accompanying drawings, Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a plan view of my improved machine. Fig. 2, Sheet 2, is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3, Sheet 2, is a detail view, showing the seed-boxes raised and the driving mechanism out of gear. Fig. 4, Sheet 3, is a plan view of one of the seed-spouts, ad justablehoe-bracket, and furrowing and covering shovels. Fig. 5, Sheet 3, is a bottom plan view of one of the feed-spouts. Fig. 6, Sheet 3, is a sectional elevation through the dotted line .00 x of Fig. 4, with the feed-spout removed. Fig. 7, Sheet 3, is a plan view of the adjustable hoe-bracket. As seen by reference to Figs. 1 and 2, the main frame of the machine is composed of an axle, A, carrying at its ends stubspindles, upon which the carrying-wheels B are secured and revolve, said wheels having secured to the inner sides of their hubs driving sprocketwheels (0. Secured and extending rearwardly from the axle are two beams, 0, connected at their rear ends by a beam, D, and by a transverse shaft, E.
Between the beams O are two central beams, F, secured near their rear ends to the beam D, and serving to support the seat-beam G, provided with its seat H, and between the forward projecting ends of which the poleor tongue is secured. A rear caster-wheel, I, is swiveled, by means of arms J and any suitable pivot pin or bolt, to the rear of the main frame at its middle.
The seeding apparatus is carried upon two secondary frames suitably hinged to the axle at its outer end. Each of these secondary frames is composed of two bars, K, united by tie-rods and spacing-thimble L, and provided upon its outer side with a bracket, 1), in which is journaled a sprocket-wheel, c, in line with the sprocketwheels a upon the hubs of the wheels B. A drive-chain, d, connects the sprocket-wheels a and c.
Secured to or formed integral with the sprocket-wheels c are small pinions e, meshing with an inverted crown-pinion secured upon the lower projecting end of the feed-plate shaft within the feed boxes or hoppers M,whose interior feeding mechanism may be of the usual or any suitable construction. These feedboxes are pivoted at their forward ends by means of arms 5/ to lugs it upon the beams K, and have at their rear ends bracket-arms 13, to the outer rear sides of which vertically-adj ustable plates j are secured, each of said plates carrying an outwardly-projecting stud or pin, it, confined in segmental slots Zin crank-arms N, whose lower ends are pivoted, as at m, to the outer sides of the outer beams K. Arod, n, is hooked to each of the crank-arms N, extends forward, and is adj ustably pivoted to a plate, 0, upon each end of the axle, or to any other convenient fixed point upon the main frame above the axis, upon which the secondary frame is vibrated; and the arrangement of the parts is such that when the secondary frames are in a substantially horizontal position,with the machine at work, the pins It will be at the rear lower ends of the slots Z, and the pinions 1 will be in engagement with the pinions e,so as to receive motion from the sprocketwheels cand a and drive-chain (1,130 cause the operation of the drilling mechanism; but whenever the secondary frames are raised so as to bring the hoes out of con tact with the ground as in transporting'the machinethe act of raising the secondary frames will,through the me.- dium of the rods a, push back the slotted crank-arms N, which in traveling back will raise the pins k, thereby lifting the seed-boxes sufficiently to cause the disengagement of the pinions e f, thus throwing the feeding mechanism out of gear.
It will be observed that the slots Z have inclined shoulders near their upper ends,so that the pins k are more abruptly and quickly lifted near the ends of the backward stroke of the arms N.
To enable the driver from his seat to readily lift the secondary frames,I provide two levers, O, pivoted near the forward ends of the beams G, as at 1), Fig. 8, from which levers pivoted rods I? extend back and are connected to the upper ends of the bell-crank arms Q, extending from sleeves R, pivoted upon the outer ends of the shaft E. The lower ends of these bell-crank arms have outwardlyprojecting pins or studs g, which are confined in a horizontally-slotted bracket, S, secured upon each of the inner beams, K, of the secondary frames. By drawing back the levers O the bell-crank arms areso rotated as to lift up the secondary frames sufficiently high to bring the shovels out of the ground and throw the seeding mechanism out of gear by the same operation. The rods P are so pivoted to theleversOthat when the latter are drawn back their pivotedpoints, as seen in Fig. 8, are brought below the pivoted points of the levers, thus forming a lock. Toes 1* upon the lower forward ends of the levers come in contact with a flange, s, orother suitable stop, to prevent the levers 0 from being thrown too far forward and the secondary frames from being lowered beyond their proper working position.
The hoe-conduits T, Figs. 2 and 6, have secured to their lower front ends thefurrowshovels U, and to lugs V, projecting from their rear sides, curved covering-shares W, which are adjustably attached thereto by a pivotbolt,-t, and a locking-bolt, u, which engages with notches or perforations c in the lugs V. This hoe-conduit is pivoted at its rear end, as at w, to lugs upon the under side of a slotted plate, X, which is provided on its forward under side with a perforated lug, a, passed through an aperture in the forward projecting end of the hoe-conduit and adapted to receive a wooden brake-pin, b. The plate X is flat upon its top and provided'with transverse slots 0, by which it is adjustably secured to the under side of the beams K by means of bolts passed through said beams and slots. The plate is sufficientl y wide andthe slots sufficientlylong to changethe widths of the furrows from three and one-half feet to four feet, (more or less,) as is desired. The plate X is likewiseprovided with an aperture, d, just over the top of the hoe-cond uit, and receives in its upper end the feed-spout A, which spout is held in place by a slotted clipplate, e, and a thumb-screw, f. The upper plate, lifting the spout, whose lower end is provided with teats g, which engage with notches h in the aperture d, and reinserting it in its properly-adjusted position, and re clamping it with the clip-plate.
It will be seen from this construction that I have a perfectlybalanced and rigid main frame supported on three wheels in such manner that the weight of the machine is in no wise thrown upon the horses necks; also, that in adjusting the width of furrows the secondary frames carrying the seeding apparatus do not have to be moved, as in other machines of this class; also, that the operator is so placed upon the machine as to enable him to control its operation and to see at all times that it is working properly. Again, it will be observed that the covering-shares form practicallya part of the hoe conduit or standard, so that in case an obstruction is met sufficient to break the pin b the shares W, as well as the shovel U, could swing back out of the way.
I am aware of the state of the art'as set forth in the patent to Fulgham, January 29, 1878, and to Runstetler, August 17, 1886, and do not claim the construction therein shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim- 1. In a double-row corn-drill, the combination, with a rigid main frame supported upon two carrying and driving wheels, and a rear caster-whee], of two independently hinged and vibrating secondary frames united to the main frame at each side thereof, and carrying the seeding mechanism and furrowing-hoes, substantially as described.
2. In a double-row corn-drill having a main frame supported on wheels, and vibrating secondary frames hinged thereto,of the seed-boxes hinged to said secondary frames, seeding mechanism within said boxes, driving mechanism actuated by the main wheels, and connecting mechanism, whereby when said secondary frames are lowered the seeding mechanism and driving mechanism are automatically thrown into gear, and whereby when said secondary frames are raised the seeding mechanism and driving mechanism are automatically thrown out of gear, substantially as described.
3. In a double-row corn-drill, the combination, with the main frame, the secondary vibrating framesv hinged thereto, and seed-boxes hinged to said secondary frames, of the segmentally-slotted crank-arms hinged to said secsprockets journaled to the secondary frames,
and provided with driving-pinions, said two sets of sprockets being connected by drivechains, of the vibrating secondary frames having the seed boxes hinged thereto, and the crown-pinion normally meshing with the pinions on the sprockets on the secondary frames and connected with the seeding mechanism, with connecting mechanism, substantially as described, whereby the raising of the secondary frames causes the tilting of the seed-boxes and the crown-pinions to be thrown put of gear with the sprocket pinions, and whereby the lowering of said frames causes said pinions to be thrown into gear,substantia1ly as described.
5. In a double-row corn-drill, the combination, with the main frame and the secondary frames, of levers pivoted to the main frame and unit-ed to the secondary frames by bellcrank arms and connecting-rods,substantially as described, whereby the vibration of said 1evers causes the raising or lowering of the secondary frames either simultaneously or inde pendently, substantially as described.
The combination, with the inclined slotted crank-arms N pivoted to the secondary frames and united by a rod, n, to a fixed point upon the main frame, of the seed-boxes hinged to the secondary frames, and provided with studs entering the slots of the arms N, whereby the vibration of said arms caused by the raising and lowering of said frames effects the raising and lowering of the seed-boxes, substantially as and for the purpose described.
7. In a double-row corn-drill having a main frame and vibrating secondary frames hinged thereto, laterallyadjustable plates secured to said secondary frames, said plates having secured to their under sides the furrowinghoes and covering-shares, whereby the width of the furrows may be changed by the adjustment of said plates on the secondary frames, substantially as described.
