Description

J.v H. GILBERT.
EYEGLASS- FRAME.
No. 352,462. Patented Nov. 9, 1886.
CW w 0% NV ENTOR fi w WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAIRUS H. GILBERT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO T.
, B. HAGSTOZ 8t 00., OF SAME PLACE.
EYEGLASS-FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,462, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed December 29, 1885. Serial No. 187,029. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AIRUS H. GILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Spring Eyeglass-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my improvement is to adapt the frames of springeyeglasses to noses of varying shape, so that it is possible to adjust the glasses with exactness.
To the above ends my invention consists-in a frame, a good form of a convenient embodiment of which is represented in the accompanying drawings and described in this specification, the particular subject-matter claimed as novel being hereinafter definitely specified.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Figs. 2 and 3 side elevations, of a frame embodying my invention. Fig. 4 is a front elevational fragmentary detail of the adjustable nose-clamp.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
In the drawings, A are the eyes or bows which contain the glasses or lenses a, and B the spring-bridge which unites the said bows. The springbridge is fixedly attached to studs a on the bows by means of screws or kindred retaining contrivances, b. The spring-bridge extends downward beyond the studs a a certain distance to form what I call bridgelegs b The bridge-legs, however, need notice a part of the bridge, but may simply be projecting arms secured to the bows.
C are the nose plates or clamps, which seat themselves upon the sides of the nose of the wearer. The clamps are connected with the bridge-legs b by adjustable bars or links D,
c are the pivots which respectively connect the clamps at or near their centers with one extremity of a link, and d are the pivots which connect the other extremities of said links with the lower extremities of the bridge-legs of the bridge. Upon these pivots are preferably applied small coiled springs 6, rubber or leather cushions or washers, or kindred frictional contrivances, which serve to give a frictional tension to the movement, respectively, of the links with regard to the legs of the bridge and of the clamps with regard to the links.
It is obvious that the clamps can be moved with the links with respect to their position as to the legs of the bridge, so as to assume any one of the positions indicated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of'the drawings, or any intermediate position.
The object of applying the springs to the pivots is simply to stiffen the joints, and such elastic tension of all the parts as is desirable is secured by the natural elasticity of the prolonged legs of the bridge.
The clamps are roughened upon their opposing faces, so as to seat themselves firmly upon the nose.
Other contrivances than that represented for connecting the spring-bridge with the bows may be resorted to, and it is possible to dis pense with'the pivot-springs and use ordinary links, and the legs of the bridge. I prefer, however, as stated, to interpose the coiled springs. The links may be more or less elastic, as also the bridge-legs.
It is obvious that my improvement. renders it possible to adjust the lenses sufficiently far forward of the nose-clamps and their seat upon the nose to cause the said lenses to clear eyelashes of varying projectiona very important property, which no adjustable frame has, to my knowledge, heretofore possessed.
I am aware that I am not the first to invent adjustable attached nose-pieces, and to such invention, broadly, I therefore lay no claim,
attaching nose-pieces hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- clamps with the prolonged legs of the bridge or kindred projecting arms secured to the bows by means of adjustable links pivoted to and to the centers of the nose-pieces, substantially as and for-the purposes set forth.
2. The nose clamps connected at or near their centers with adjustable frictionally pivoted links, in turn connected to bridge-legs or kindred projecting arms secured to the bows, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 14th day of February, A. D. 1885.
In presence of- JAIRUS H. GILBERT.
W. REED WILLIAMS, HENRY R. SAUNDERS,
