SWING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,430, dated November 9, 1886.
. Application filed February 8, 1886. Serial No. 191,167. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OSCAR L. SPRAGUE, of Andover, in the county of Ashtabula, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombined Swing, Hammock, and Cradle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention has for its objects to pro vide a combined swing, hammock, and cradle which may be rocked or swung by the occupant or by an attendant, and which will protect the occupant from the direct rays of the sun and from rain when placed in the open air, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation showing my invention; Fig. 2, a detached detail view of one of the rollers and the cords by which the swing may be operated by the occupant; Fig. 3, avertical sectional view of the device; Fig. 4, a transverse sectional view of the protectingcanopy, and Fig. 5 a detached view of a guide which controls and limits the motion of the swing.
The letter A indicates the base of the de-' vice, which is composed of a rectangular frame of wood, and which is provided with stand ards or uprights B at each side, to which is pivoted a rocking frame, 0. The ends of the said frame work in guides D, located at each end of the base-frame, the said guides also serving to limit the motion of the said rocking frame. The rocking frame is also provided with levers E at each side, by means of which it may be operated by an attendant. Upon the rocking frame is erected a vertical frame or superstructure, F, to the upper side ties or beams, G, of which are pivoted the upper ends of the swing-bars H. These bars H, at their lower ends, are pivoted or loosely connected to a platform, H, carrying the car or cradle 1. Between the side beams of the vertical frame are located the pulleys K, the shafts of which are journaled in said beams, and around said pulleys are passed the cords L, the upper ends of which are secured to the transverse beams of the superstructure before mentioned. The lower ends of the-cords are secured to the car or cradle in such position that the cords may be manipulated by the occupant, so as to swing or rock the same.
suitable supports, M.a canopy, N,which is provided with longitudinal openings P, through which the cords L pass and work. The said canopy is preferably made of a frame-work of wood, covered with a suitablefabric to protect the occupant of the car or cradle from sun or rain in case the device is located in the open air.
The lower part or base of the device is procross-beams of the rocking frame, and serve to hold and return thesame to its normal position and give it an easy motion when rocked back and forth.
The operation of my invention will be apparent from the above description. The occupant of the car or cradle, to swing or rock the same, has only to pull on the opposite cords, which, working over the pulleys, gives the nec essary motion. When the device is to be operated by an attendant, the levers at each side are depressed and elevated, rocking the whole superstructure or frame.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
. The combination, with the rocking frame, its superstructure, and swinging frame, of the handles E and thesprings It, the whole arranged to doperate substantially in the manner specifie In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of January, 1886.
OSCAR L. SPRAGUE.
