Be it known that I, GEORGE P. FENNER, a, citizen of the United States, residing at New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Delivery Apparatus for Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet-delivery apparatus adapted more especially for printing-presses; and it has for its object to provide novel and efficient mechanism for taking away the sheets from the impression-cylinder and depositing` them properly on a suitable support. f
The obj ect of my invention I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure lis a side elevation of a printing-press containing my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, partly in section, in the plane xx, Fig. l.

gear-wheels D' D2, transmits motion to the main shaft E. rIhe shaft E, by means of a crank, E', and rod El, imparts motion to the traveling rack-wheel E3, which meshes into a stationary rack, F, Fig. 2. The rack-wheel E3 engages with a suitable rack7 E5, attached to the type-bed C, andimparts a reciprocating motion to the type-bed. A rack, C', on the type-bed is suitably arranged to engage with a cog-wheel, B, of the'impression-cylinder B and to impart motion to the said cylinder B. In the case of stop-cylinder presses, a portion of this cog-wheel B is cut away, so as to permit the type-bed C to travel while the cylinder is at rest 4during certain intervals. The impressioncylinder is provided with a catch or lug, F, which is adapted to be engaged by a catch-lever, F', which operates to check, hold, and start the impression-cylinder B`in any well-known manner.
In the example shown in the drawings the catch-lever Fis properly pivoted or fulcrumed, as at f, andis vibrated or moved bya cam, F, and a rod, F3. The rod F3 isf connected at one point to the lever F, `and said rod F3 has a roller-stud or other suitable appliance for' engaging a suitable way of the cam F2'. IPart of the rod F3 is slotted or bifu rcated,so as to clear the main shaft E, and is provided with a block, f2.
The impression-cylinder is provided with suitable grippers, B2, for holding the sheet to be printed upon the cylinder. The grippers B2 are operated by springs and by cams or postsB3 B, suitably arranged in any wellknown manner.
G'is a rack secured tothe frame A, and said rack G is engaged by a gear-wheel, I. The gear I has a shaft, I, provided with two supporting disks, reels, or wheels, K K. The reels or wheels K K form a carriage for the reel J, and are adapted to travel back and forth or to reciprocate along suitable ways, K K. The disks K and shaft l support the car.- rierreel J J, which is constructed to receive -the printed sheetfromtheimpression-cylinder B. The gear-wheel I is adaptedgto engage at proper intervals with a gear-Wheel, K2, on the impressioncylinder B, so that the gear I and reel J receive a rotary motion.
The carrier-reel J J, as seen in the drawings, is formed of two disks. Bymaking said disks adjustable toward or from one another on the shaft I said carrier-reel J can be adjusted for varying widths of sheets.
To the main shaft Eis secured a suitable cam, Il, which engages with a roller-stud, I3, on a lever, I. The lever Itis properly fulcrumed or pivoted, as ati, and said lever I* connects, by a link, l5,with the shaft I', carrying the gears I I. A rod, I, extends through a socket, is, on the frame of the press, and is connected to the lever 1*. The rod I6 has a collar, it, which is subjected to the action of a spring, Il, in such a manner that the rollerstud I3 of the lever I4 is continually kept in eng-agement with the cam Il. Other known means may, however, be employed to keep the roller-stud I3 in engagement with the cam I2.
The gear-wheel I and the disks of the carriage K have bearings for a gripper-shaft, M', on which shaft are mounted grippers M. The

grippers M are operated by a lever, M3, fulcrumed at M3 on the gear I, and subjected to the action of a spring in any well-known manner. Trip-cams M3 M3, suitably xed to the device, operate the lever M2 and grippers M at proper intervals. The grippers Mimpinge upon asuitable rod or blade, K, properly attached to the gear-wheel I and carriage K', so that the edgeY of a sheet can be held between the grippers M and the blade K4. Instead of a rod, K, a radial web or partition can be employed, extending from the shaft I toward the v circumference of the gear I. To allow room for such partition, the disks, which in this case form the reel J, will have to be slotted. K3 is a support suitably fixed to the device, and on which support the axle I of the reel J rests at proper intervals.
The support K3, as here shown, comprises two parts-that is, a support at each side secured to the frame A, and each slotted, one end of the slots being open, so that the ends of the reel-axle move into the slots when the carrier-reel is advanced to the impression-cylinder, and move out of said slots when the carrier-reel is moved away from the impressioncylinder.
When a sheet is to be delivered from the impression-cylinder B .to the carrier-reel J, the carrier-reel is moved by the cam I3 and lever I4 toward the cylinder B. The shaft I passes onto the xed support K3, as seen in Fig. 1, the gear I comes into engagement with the gear K3, and the revolution of the cylinder B now causes the reel J to revolve. The grippers M of the carrier-reel J grasp the sheet on the impression-cylinder when an edge of said sheet has been passed within reach of said grippers M, and said sheet is thus taken off the cylinder B and wound onto the reel J. The reel J is then by the action of lever I1L moved away from the cylinder B and along the racks G andways K K. During this movement of the reel J the grippers M are actuated at the proper time by the cam or post M,3 so as 4to release the sheet which detaches itself from the reel J, and as the reel J passes on away from the cylinder B the sheet from lthe reel J comes to rest upon a table, H.
During the time that the reel J is taking a sheet from the cylinder B it is well to lock the axle I into the support or journal K3, so .that the axle I cannot accidentally pass out of the support K3 While revolving in said support. For locking the axle I in the support K3, I provide a suitable locking device, n3. (Shown in Fig. 1 as out of engagement with the axle I.) The locking devicen3 swings about a pivot, n3, suitably attached to the frame, and said locking device is actuated by a rod or arm, N. The' rod or arm N* is guided by a guide-pin or steadying-pin,y n, and said rod N3 receives motion from a cam, N3, on an axle or shaft, N3. The main shaft E actuates the rod or axle N2 by means of bevel-gears N N, suitably attached to the main shaft and to the shaft N3. Said rod Nt, by acting upon a pin or stud, n3, upon the locking device n3, will bring said locking device into and out of the locking position at proper intervals. Said rod Nis also provided with a notch or stop, n', and, through means of an arm, N3, and shaft or axle n3, said rod N* actuates an arm, N3, provided with a notch or stop similar to the notch or stop 'n'.
In the position shown in Fig. l the rod N* and arm N3 are in engagement with pins n, fixed to the carrier-reel J, or to some suitable portion of the mechanism connected with the carrier-reel-as, for example, to the gear I and to one of the disks or wheels K. When the reel J moves toward and into engagement with the cylinder B, t-he rod N4 and arm N3 are in such positions as to engage the pins or stops n3.' Theresult of this engagement is to secure proper revolution of the reel J after the gear I has passed out of engagement with the rack G and before said gear I has come into engagement with the gear K3. As improper revolution of the reel J might derange the proper relative positions of the grippers M and B3, such improper revolution is to be avoided. When the reel J is about to pass-out of engagement with the cylinder B, the rod N4 and arm N6 again come into engagement with the pins or stops n3 and again secure proper revolution of the reel J. The cam N3 is so adj usted that during the time the gear K2 actuates or revolves the gear I said rod N* and arm N3 are out of engagement with the pins or stops h3. By'having the reel J so arranged as to come into contact lwith the'cylinder B during the transfer of a sheet from the cylinder to the reel, sagging of the sheet is prevented.
`Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the impressioncylinder, of the stationary supports K3, having open-ended slots, the carrier-reel J, having an` axle, I', and adapted to be actuated by theimpression cylinder, and means, substantially such as described, for moving the reel-axle into and out of the slotted supports and to and from the cylinder. i
2. The combination, with the impressioncylinder, of the carrier-reel J, a fixed support or journal, K3, for the shaft ofthe carrier-reel, and a locking device,fn3, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the impressioncylinder, of the carrier-reel J, a fixed support or journal, K3, for the shaft of the carrier-reel,

anda detent mechanism, N4 N3, substantially cylinder, of stationary supports K3, the carrier-reel J, having an axle, I', and end sup porting-disks, K', the Ways K, located beneath the reel and on which the supporting-disks rest and travel, and means, substantially such as described, for moving the carrier-reel to 4and from the cylinder and causing the reelaxle to move into and out of engagement With the stationary supports.
7. The combination, with the impressioncylinder and the gear K2 thereof, of the carrier-reel J, having a gear, I, adapted to engage with the gear on the impression-cylinder, and a fixed support for the shaft of the carrierreel, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination, with the impressioncylinder, of a stationary support, K3, a carrierreel, J, having an axle, I, and means, substantially such as described, for moving the reel-axle into and out of engagement with zo g the said support and to and from the cylinder.
9. The combination of the impression-cylinder having the attached gear K2., the reciprocating carrier-reel J, having a shaft, I', provided With a gear, I, adapted to engage and disengage the gear on the cylinder, stationary support K3, the stationary rack G, and means, substantially such as described, for reciprocating the reel and moving its shaft into and out of engagement With the said support.
