SYSTEM OF WATER-DISTRIBUTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,389, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed August 30, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. BASSEIT, of Watertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvementsin Systems of Water- Distribution; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying. drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a diagram in section of my improved water-distributing system. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the valve which opens and closes communication with the tower, a safetyvalve being shown as located in the center of said valve; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section through the middle of the same.
My invention has relation to systems of water-distribution in towns or cities or large establishments having a reservoir anda pumping mechanism; and it consists in the improved method of distributing the water at a uniform low pressure for ordinary use, and at an increased pressure in the case of a fire or other case when an increased pressure is desired, and in the improved construction and combination of parts of the means for accomplishing this result, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In systems of waterdistribution in towns and cities a water tower or reservoir may be situated so as to receive the water-supply and to distribute it into the main at a pressure sufficiently high for ordinary purposes, raising it into buildings where desired; but in the case of a fireor other case where an increased pressure is desired the increased pressure which might be formed in the main by in creased action of the pumping mechanism would be liable to be lost, as the water would be forced up into the reservoir or tower, from which it would only pass with the ordinary pressure through the main, the surplus water running over, and it would therefore be necessary, in a case where an increase of pressure was desired, to have means by which the reservoir .may be cut off from the main. This might be accomplished by a simple gate-valve; but if, by an accident or intentionally, the pumping mechanism should be stopped the Serial No. 212,208. (No model.)
pressure in the main and the supply would cease, leaving the main empty or with only sufficient water to fill it without the pressure to force the water up, and for the purpose of avoiding such a case I provide the main with a valve opening from the reservoir or tower, andhaving means for operating it instantly from the pump-house or other central station. It will now be seen that when the pressure from the pumping mechanism stops, the pressure of the water in the reservoir will force the valve open and supply water in the main at the normal pressure.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the system in a sectional diagram, which will illustrate the principle of my invention, and I have shown the reservoir or tower A, while B is the pumping mechanism, and G is the main .connecting the reservoir and the pumping mechanism, which main is provided with fire plugs D and suitable service-taps, E.
F is the valve, which opens away from the reservoir, and which is hinged in the main between the reservoir and the service-pipe nearest to the reservoir, and the valve is formed with asuitable mechanism, G, for opening or closing it, and has an electric connection, H, with the pump-house or other central station, by means of which the valve may be operated.
The mechanism foroperating the valve and the connection between the operating mechanism and the pumphouse or other central station may be of any suitable construction, and the connection between the operating mechanismaud the pump house or station is of such a construction and character that the operating mechanism may be immediately set into operation by the said connection. now be seen that as soon as an alarm of fire is sounded or an increased pressure is .desired It will for any other purpose the person in charge of the pump-house or central station may immediately cause the pumps to be set in motion, increasing the pressure in the main, and the valve may be dropped, cutting off the connection from the pumping mechanism to the reservoir, while allowing a flow of Water from the reservoir into the main immediately upon the cessation of the increased pressure in the main.
The valve may be provided wi h a safetyvalve, I, opening toward the reservoir, which may be adjusted to open at a pressure greater than the desired increased pressure or greater than the pressure which the main may bear, the water passing through the valve toward the reservoir.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a system of water-distribution,the combination, with a reservoir, a pumping mechanism, a main connecting the reservoir with the pumping mechanism, and having servicepipes and fire-plugs upon it, a mechanicallycontrolled valve in the main near the reser- I voir, opening away from it, and means for instantly closing or opening the said valve from a central point, cutting off the supply from the pumping mechanism to the reservoir, of a relief or safety valve located in the flap of the aforesaid valve and adapted to open toward the reservoir, and adjustable to open at any desired pressure, as and for the purpose set forth.
