Description

UNITED STATESI PATENT FFIC.
GEORGE F. SIMONDS, OF FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS.
ROLLER-SWAGING DIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,366, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed April 8, 1886. Serial No. 198.256. (No model.)
. the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specitication, in Which- Figure l is a side elevation of a die illustrating my improved manner of forming the teeth on the working-faces. Fig. 2 illustrates a modification of the same.
My invention relates 'to-dies for making rolled forgings that are circular in transverse section, and especially adapted for use in the forging-machine patented by me June 9, 1885, No. 319,752, and is an improvement on the dies for which patents were issued to me June 9, 1885, Nos. 319,754, 319,755, and 319,756, and has for its object to so make the die faces as to absolutely insure perfect 'rotation of the blank regardless of the direction in which the dies may be moving; and to this end it consists in dies provided with workingfaces, wherein are cut raking or diagonally- -pitched teeth to seize the heatedy blank to manner of saw-teeth,in the direction of the travel of the die, and thereby are enabled to 'take a better hold upon the surface of the heated blank and absolutely insure its rotation.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the spreading surface of the die-faces are provided with a toot-h, t, having its point in a vertical line, and on each side of it a tooth or teeth, t', raking in opposite directions, which is a desirable form to be used when -the blank is to be submitted to a number of reciprocations of the dies.
I am aware that heretofore reciprocating dies for sWaging-screws have been made with thread forming surfaces arranged diagonal to the die -faee, and with the sides of said grooves having a` pitch in one direction. Such grooves, however, constitute the forming-face ofthe die. While in my invention the grooves are transverse the die-face and per form only the function of forcing the blank t0 rotate in the required time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent., is-
l. Dies for machines for making rolled forgings, provided on their surfaces With trans= versely-arranged raking-teeth, for the purpose set forth.
2. Dies for machines for making rolled'forg-v`
