APPARATUS .FOR HOLDING LEATHER WHILE BEING SCALLOPED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,359, dated November 9, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON SCHMIEDL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Holding Leather while being Scalloped; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings. which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of my invention, the block being shown partly broken away. side elevation of same, and Fig. 3 an end elevation with block removed. Figs. 4:, 5, and 6 are enlarged detail views of the clamp shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, showing also a series of blanks or laps and a pattern therefor.
My invention has for its object to produce a device to facilitate the holding and cutting of leather and other blanks-such as the button-laps of shoes-which require to have their edges scalloped.
By my invention I provide a construction whereby pins are dispensed with, the work held steadily, and other advantages gained, as hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates a rectangular wooden block, on which the blanks shown at B B rest while being cut or scalloped to conform to the shape of the pattern shown at O, resting on said blanks.
D is arectangular frame, preferably of castings, and comprising a flat base, D, a swinging or pivoted yoke, D standards D D and The base D has a crosspiece, (1, centrally located, and it is also rabbeted around its inner edge at d, forming a ledge for the rest or support of the block A.

The yoke D has a set-screw, (Z and the back plate, D, a similar screw, (i These screws when turned in press against the block' A and hold it firmly in position. The yokeD is made to swing, so as to allowit to be lowered in inserting and withdrawing the block A,and the plate D is made vertically movable to adjust the clamp it carries relatively to the upper surface of said block, or to the height of the pile of blanks or laps and the pattern resting on said block.
D is a rearwardly-extending bracket on the back plate, D and preferably made integral therewith. Said bracket has a longitudinal dovetail groove, (2 and a set-screw, d, for fastening a sliding plate, E, which forms the base of a clamp, E. The forward end of the slide E is formed with a flange, e, which is preferably curved so as to conform to the concave inner edges of the blanks or laps B and pattern 0, which rest against it.

G is a lever having a oa1n-head, g, preferably serrated, as shown at g, and fulcrumed at g on the slide E, so that it can be swung or thrown horizontally to bring its head under the rear end of lever F, thereby tilting or throwing down the forward end of said lever F, and reversely moved to allow said lever F to rise under the influence'of a retracting or lifting spring, f. The forward end of lever F is bent downwardly, as shown, and enlarged at its extremity, forming a clamping-toe, f Said lever has also a cross-head,f beneath which pass two other toes, f f which are pivoted at fflf, so that they may be adjusted by a horizontal swinging movement relatively to the center toe, f the adjustability being indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 4. If desired, more than two adjustable toes may, be applied to the lever F. There may, for example, be one for every scallop c of the pat- 5 tern O.
To hold the lever G dogged when under the lever F, a pawl, h, engaging with a ratchet, g, on said lever G, may be employed.
The operation is as follows: The block A having first been placed in the frame D and duly secured by the screws d d", the blanks or laps to be cut are laid in a pile on said block, the pattern on top, and the inner edges of said blanks and pattern resting against the flange e, which forms a gage. The lever F, which was previously raised by the action of springf, is now tilted downwardly -at its forward end, bringing the toes down 011 the pattern and clamping the latter and the blanks firmly on the block A, the lever G being thrown to eifect the movement of said lever F. The scalloping of the blanks or laps is now effected inthe usual manner. Asthecutting or scalloping operation chips the block A, it is desirable from time to time to secure a fresh surface thereon for such operation. Ac cordingly the clamp E may be released and moved forward or back by first unloosening thescrew d, and secured ina new position by turningin said screw against the slide E.
It will be noted that the bracket D and the clamp E are a little to one side of the median or central line of the base D; hence the scalloping is performed not directly over the center of the block, but to one side of such cen ter, and by lifting said block and turningit in the frame D substantially every part of the surface of the block may be used. When the whole operative surface of said block becomes scored or chipped it may be planed off. As
this reduces theheight ot the block, the clamp E and back plate, D, may be correspondingly lowered by first loosening the screws dl and then tighteningthe latter.
"What I claim as my invention is as follows:
1 A frame, D, and block A, and provided with the adjustable swinging or pivoted clamp constructed and adapted to embrace and se cure said block, substantially as shown an described. A
2. A frame constructed substantially as de scribed, and adapted to receive and hold a block, A, and combined therewith, said frame having a pi oted or Swinging yoke, D", with set-screws'd", substantially as shown and described.
3. A frame, D, and block A, said frame having one of its sides composed of or comprising an adjustable plate or bar, D, which embraces said block, substantially as shown and described.
4. The frame D, comprising a base, D, pivoted or swinging yoke I)", standards D D and adjustable plate or bar D*, the bar D being attached to side bars, D1 which embrace a block, A, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination, with frame D and block A, and with a clamp which embraces said block and holds it in position, of a clamp, E, for clamping work on said block, substantially as shown and described.
6. The combination, with a frame, D, and block A, and provided with a clamp which embraces said block and holds it in position, of a sliding horizontally-adjustable clamp, E, substantially as shown and described.

11. The clamp comprising a slide or base, E, and lever F, having downwardlyextending toes, separately pivoted to the lever F and adjustable relatively to each other, substantially as shown and described.
