GRIP.
SPECIFECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,356, dated November 9, 1886.
Application tiled February 26, 1886. Serial No. 193,304. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, EDWARD SAMUEL, a citizen of the United States, and VIcToa AN- GERER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria,
and both residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in OableGrips, of which the following is a specitcation.
Our invention consists ot' certain improve- Io ments in the construction of the devices for Supporting the grip-frame and for operating the movable bar of said grip-frame, the object of our invention being to permit the ready application of the grip to or its removal from I5 the supporting-frame on the car, and to provide simple and efticient gripoperating devices which will not be disturbed by changes in the position of the grip-bar.

The transverse bars B are adapted to bearings on longitudinal hangers C, Fig. 3, which are in the present instance hung to the axles of ,the car, thereby permitting free lateral movement of the bars Band frame A, and also any lateral twisting movement-such, for instance, as maybe caused when the car is round- 5o ing the curve.
In bearings in the frame A is a shaft, H, having an operating-lever, l, and provided at its inner end with a cam, h, adapted to act on the vertically-movable operating-bar F ofthe grip, which is guided by the tixed plates E E of the grip-bar.
The plates E E are attached to a plate, G, Fig. 8, which is securely riveted to the said plates, and also to a bar. J, the latter projecting ateach end beyond the plate G, and serving to support the plate G on the frame A, as will be described hereinafter.
The plate G has a central opening, g, to permit the free movement of the cam hof the shaft H, and the frame A is also recessedat a2 65 for the same purpose. The plate F has an opening, f, for th`e reception ot' the cam IL, and in the upper portion of this openingfis secured'a shoe, f, which is acted upon oy the cam and is held in place by a pin,f2, pass- 7o ing through both the shoe and the plate F, a lip of the shoe extending up on the outside ol the plate G, and tending to prevent any lateral play of the upper portion of the plate F. (See Figs. 2 and 8.)
The frame A, Fig. 6, has shoulders c c at at each end ot' a recess, K, into which thegrip-franie X is inserted, these shoulders c c serving as supports for the projecting ends of the bar J. lA rib, d, on the upper portion of the frame A, projects over the bar J,and thus serves to confine the frame X vertically to the frame A.
Secured to or formed on the frame A are two keepers, e e, having their inner edges, e', beveled, as best observed in Figs. 2 and 6, and wh'en the frame X is in position in the frame A, a wedge, M. is inserted between the face of the plate G of said frame and the keepers e e of the frame A, the outer faces, m m, of the wedge bearing against the inner laces, e', of the keepers, and the'inner faces, m', ot' the wedge bearing against the plate G, so that any jarring ofthe frame A will tend to tighten the edge M' and firmly retain the frame X in place. The wedge is recessed at mito permit the free movement of the cam it and shoef. On the inner face of the wedge M are two hooked lugs, n n, which project beneath the ends jj .ofthebar J,which have recessesj at the rear, as shown in Fig. 9, and the frame A l is also recessed ati ,to receive the lugs a n.
The wedge M is provided with a handle, N, preferably of the shape shown in Fig. 7, in order to facilitate the lifting of the wedge to release the frame X from the frame A` and as the wedge is raised the lugs n will engage with the projectionsj, so that the frame X can be readily removed with said wedge from the frame A, the handle being within easy reach through the trap in the car-floor, and the frame X on the lifting of the wedge having snlicient lateral freedom to permit it to clear the retainingrib d at the top of the frame A. It sometimes happens that the frame X,owing to a defect in the grip or other canse, has to be released from the supporting-frame on the car, and it will be noticed on referring to Fig. 8 that the frame X can, on removing the wedge M, be readily dropped from the frame A, the flat top of said frame X permitting the passage of the car over the dropped portion Without interfering with the transverse bars B. As the handledl i' wedge is detachable from the grip-frame, it offers no obstruction to thefree manipulation of said frame in making any necessary/repairs thereto.
The lever I, which is secured to the canishaft H, is of the form as best observed in-Fig. 1, and is provided with a counterbalanceweight, P, which is ad]l ustably secured to an arm, I, of the lever. A segmental bar, P', serves as a guide for the weight P, and prevents any lateral movement of the same in one direction, the frame A preventing such movement in the opposite direction. All twisting of the lever I and strain of the shaft H when the car runs at high speed round a curve is then prevented.
Q is the grip operating rod, connected to any suitable operating mechanism on the car, this rod being connected to the lever I by a link, S, the pivot-points s s at the opposite end of which are at right angles to each other, so as to permit the frame A to move laterally or vertically without straining the rod Q. A series of openings, p, in the lever I are arranged in the arc of a circle having its center at the axis of the shaft H, so that the point of connection of the link S to the lever may be shifted to compensate for wear of the parts and take up lost motion. In the drawings the cam 7L isV so placed on the shaft in respect to the lever I that any movement in the direction of the arrow, by pulling on the rod Q, will cause the cam to lift the bar F and close the grip -jaws, and when the rod Q is released the counterbalance weight P will return the lever I to the position shown in Fig. l, thereby permitting the bar F to fall and the grip-jaws to open. The cam may be so placed on the shaft in respect to the lever I that by elevating the lever the cam would depress the bar F, the construction of this portion of the operating mechanism depending upon t-he character of the gripping devices use We claim as our invent-ionl. The combination of the supportingframe on the car, the grip frame adapted thereto. and aretainer for said grip-frame, constructed to engage therewith as it is moved to release the grip frame from the supportingframe, whereby both grip-frame and retainer can be removed from the supporting-frame together, all substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the supporting-frame on the car, the grip frame adapted thereto, and a grip-frame retainer constructed to e11- gage therewith as it is moved to release the grip-frame from the supporting frame. said retainer having a handle-bar, whereby it can be readily manipulated, all substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the supporting-fratrie 011 the car, the gripframe adapted thereto, and a grip-frame retainer constructed to engage therewith as it is moved to release the grip -frame from the supporting-frame, said retainer being detachable from the grip-frame after the latter has been removed, all substantially as specified.
4.. The combination of the grip-frame having a projecting bar, J, the retaining-wedge M, and the frame A, having shoulders forsupporting said bar J, and keepers for the retaining-wedge M, all substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the grip-frame having a projecting bar, J, the frame A, having supporting-shoulders c and keepers e, and the retaining-wedge M, having lugs n n adapted to engage with the bar J as the wedge is removed t'rom the keepers, all substantially as specified.
6. The combination ofthe supporting-frame A, the grip-frame, the sliding bar F, the shaft H, having acam, h, acting on said bar, and a counterweighted lever, I, connectedto the shaft and to the operating-rod,substantially as set forth.
7. The combination of the grip operating shaft, the lever connected theretoLthe operatingrod Q, and a link, S, connecting said rod to the lever and havingjoints at right angles to each other, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
' 8. The combination ofthe grip-operating shaft H and its operating-arm I, havinga counter-weight, P, with the carrying-frame having a bar, P', whereby said counter-weight is laterally guided, all substantially as specified.
