To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATTHEW M. PITTMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Findlay, in the county of Hancock and Stat e of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my ini-- proved coupling. My invention has relation to car-couplings; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents the draw-head, having the side B thereof recessed on its inner face, and provided with Baring outer end, C, and also having disposed therein and secured to the rear thereof a spring, D, conforming to the shape of said inner face. This spring D, when pressure is exerted upon the same, is adapted to t in a longitudinal groove, b, which terminates in a notch, c, located in the shoulder to the rear of the aring outer end, C, and into which also the free endof the spring fits when said spring is subjected to pressure. The opposite side of the draw-head consists of a pivoted jaw, E, of the same shape as the rigid jaw, being also provided with flaring hook-shaped outer end, F, having notchf to the rear thereof, and a spring suitably secured to its inner face and adapted to fitin a similar longitudinal groove, e. A slidinglock or key, G,working in grooves or ways H in the draw-head, extends laterally from said draw-head, and by means of a snitable gearing mechanism, hereinafter referred to, serves to regulate the operation of the pivoted jaw in coupling and uncoupling the cars. The upper side of this sliding lock Gis grooved longitudinally, and has arranged therein a series of cogs. I, and it is also provided on one end with a removable stop or button, J.
Vorking in a suitablebearing, K, secured to the top of, thck drnw-head is a transverse shaft, L, having shoulder or step M at one end and a cog' wheel, N, on the opposite side of the bearing, said cog-wheel being integral therewith. The teeth of this wheel N mesh with the cogs I of the sliding lock G, and by means of a lever, O, said sliding lock may be operated from the platform of the-car, or may be operated from either side thereof, the two ends ofthe transverse shaft being beveled or smoothed off, so as to afford a firm grasp when the coupling or unconpling is eiiected in this manner. Y.
P represents the arrow-head bolt, which is a substitute for the usual link, and is provided with a transverse shoulder,Q, at its central portion, which bears against the mouth-piece ofthe draw-head when the bolt is in position.
"When itis desired to couple cars by means of my invention, the sliding lock or key is movedbackward until one of the cogs of the transverse shaft comes in contact with the removable stop or button J, at which position the pivoted jawis free to admit of the entrance of the arrow-head bolt I). As the end of the bolt enters the draw-head the lever is moved backward, which simultaneously brings the sliding lock forward until it comes in contact with a laterally-extending shoulder, R, on the pivoted jaw E, the arrowhead bolt being grasped securely between the pair ofjaws B E.
To unconple the cars the reverse operation is necessary. When the sliding lock is moved backward as far as possible, the downward pressure on the pivoted jaw is relieved, and the lower spring, acting upon the bolt P, causes a pressure to be exerted upon the upperspring, and, releasing thepivoted jaw, throws thesame out of engagement with the arrow-head bolt, which readily admits of the withdrawal of the same.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my improvement will be easily understood without requiring further explanation.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl l. In a car-coupling, the combination ofthe rigid jaw having its inner face recessed and provided with a hook shaped outer end, the spring secured in the rear of said rigidjaw, the pivoted j aw having a corresponding recess and hook-shaped outer end, the spring secured in the rear ot' said pivoted jaw, and means, substantially as described, for locking and unlocking the pivoted jaw.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination ol the rigid jaw havingV its inner face recessed and provided with a longitudinal groove `and hook-shaped outer end, the spring secured in said groove, the pivoted jaw havinga corresponding recess, groove, and hook shaped outer end, the spring secured in said groove, and means, substantially as described, for locking and unlocking the pivotcd jaw. y
3. In a car coupling, the combination of the rigid jaw having hook shaped outer end, the pivotedjawhaving correspondinghook-shaped outer end, the sliding lock or key having` a series of cogs onl the upper side thereof, the transverse shaft having a step or shoulder at one end, and the other end being provided with a cog-wheel, and lever for operating the sliding lock.

In a car-coupling, the combination ofthe rigid jaw having hook-shaped outer end, the pivotedjaw havingcorrespondinghook-shaped outer end, the outer face of said end being provided with a laterally-extending flange or shoulder, the sliding lock or key having a series of cogs on the upper side thereof, the transverse shaft havingits endsbeveled, one of said ends having a step or enlargement, and the opposite end being provided with a cog- Wheel, and lever for operating the sliding lock. y 5. In a car coupling, the combination of the rigidjaw having hook-shaped outer end, the pivotedjaw havingcor responding hook-shaped end, the outer face of said end being provided With a laterally-extending ange or shoulder, the sliding lock or key havingaseries of teeth or oogsiand a removable stop or button, the transverse shaft having its ends beveled, one of said ends having a step or enlargement, and the opposite end being provided With a cog-wheel, and a level' foi-'operating the sliding lock.
