SPECIFICATION forming part of kLetters Patent No. 352,324, dated November 9, 1 886.

To all whom it may concern: k
Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM HOPE- MAN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Pullman, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Galvanic Batteries, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to batteries, and more particularly that class commonly known as the Leclanch7- battery, the object being to improve and simplify the construction of the same and to provide a battery which may be manufactured and supplied at a slight cost.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations Vof parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure lis a top plan View of a battery embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the saine.
Corresponding parts in both the figures are `denoted by the same letters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a glass jar, which is slightly smaller at its upper end than for its remainder or body portion, and said upper end is provided with exterior threads a.
Vithin the jar A is eccentrically disposed a porous cup, B, whose upper edge is preferably on a plane with that of the jar A. This cup B is filled with broken or powdered carbon,
as shown at b, and has located therein and eX- tending upwardly therefrom the carbon pole C.
D represents a cap or cover, which is provided with interiorly-arranged screw-threads c, adapted to engage the exterior threads on the jar. This cap or cover D is provided with an eccentrically-located opening, d,which is on a line with the porous cup B, but whose diameter is less than that of the cup, the carbon pole extending upwardly through and beyond said opening in the cap or cover.
'E represents a circular gasket of rubber, which fits over the upper edges of the jar A and porous cup B, and which is held in place by the cap or cover, which, when tightened, securely holds it in place and serves to effect. ually prevent movement of the porous cup. It will thus be seen that the space between the jar and the cup is thoroughly air-tight.
F' represents thezinc pole, which is located in the space between the jar A and the porous cup, and itis to accommodate this pole that the cup is placed eccentrically within the jar.
G represents air pipes or tubes extending upwardly from the porous cup.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new,v and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp l. The combination, with thejar A, having the threaded upper end, ofthe cup B, located in said jar A and having its upper edge on a plane with that of the jar, the cover having the opening, as shown, and the gasket resting on the upper edges of the jar and cup and clamped upon the latter by the cover, as set forth.
2. The combination, with thejar A, containing an exciting-fluid and having a threaded 'upper end, and the zinc pole located in the jar A, of the porous cup containing broken carbon and a carbon pole, the cover having an opening, d, the gasket resting on the upper edges of-thejar and cup, the cover clamping the gasket in place, and the air-tube G, extending from the porous cup, substantially as set forth.
