Description

(No Model.)
M. ROTHFUS'S. RATGHET DRILL.
No.352,'266. Patented Nov-9,1886.
lllllll lllhlll a NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL ROTHFUSS, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
RATCH ET-DRlLL..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,266, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed August 16, 1886. Serial No. 21l.0-20.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,'MIOHAEL ROTHFUSS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of \Villiamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ratchet Hand-Drills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hand drilling machines in which the drill is caused to turn by means of a ratchet or ratchets propelled by a lever operated by the hand; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to produce a continuous forward turning of the drill without the lost motion ordinarily required to bring back and reset the ratchet, thus gaining time and elficiency in the machine; second, to produce an instrument that is more readily adapted to be used in corners and other situations where obstructions prevent the free use of other drills. l attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurel is a top view of the instrument. Fig. 2 is the obverse or bottom view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side View of one of the ratchets and some of the accompanying parts.
B is the drill-holder and body of the instrument, provided with a set-screw for holding the drill in place. Around B, fitting in a shallow groove to prevent sliding or lateral movement, is a sleeve, L, within which B freely revolves. Surrounding and immovably' lastened upon B are two ratchet'wheels, (Z d, one on each side of the sleeve L and a short distance therefrom. Playing upon said wheels are two ratchet-bars, c c, which have a reciprocating motion in their respective paths formed by the guides K K. The ratchet-bars c 0 are kept in proper contact with their corresponding wheels, d d, by a double spring, S, fastened at its center by a screw into the sleeve L. A lever or handle, A, is pivoted to the sleeve L at the point 73, giving said handle a back ward and forward motion in the direction of the line of the drill, and also, at the will of (No model.)
the operator, a side motion in connection with the sleeve L around B.
The handle A, at or near the end pivoted T at i, is provided with two corresponding lateral projections or arms, n n, to each of which one end of the ratchet-bars c c is respectively pivoted by the bolts or pivotsff. To prevent binding, which would result from fixed pivots at f said ratchet-bars are provided with lateral slots at the point where so pivoted, permitting a side'motion or play therein of the bolts f 1'. By this mechanism I obtain a forward motion or turning of the drill by each of the two ratchets, the one recovering itsflost motion while the other is driving the drill, thus giving twice the efficiency of the ordinary ratchet-dril l.
w The motion of the handle or lever being in a line with the direction of the drill enables the operator, when drilling in a corner or narrow space, to adapt his instrument to the location and obtain a free motion of the lever, where the operation of other drills would be greatly hampered. Should it, because of obstructions or for any reason, be desirable to employ a lateral motion, as in the ordinary ratchet-drill, this instrument may be so operated, in that case acting as. a single ratchetdrill, and the handle may be so worked in a position either at right angles to the drill or at any angle within the range of its forward and backward movement.
- I do not claim as my invention any of the mechanical devices herein employed of themselves; but
-What I claim,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The drill-holder B, construct-ed wit-h two ratchet-wheels, d d, and tit-ted with a sleeve, L, in combination with the ratchet-bars c c, operated by the lever A, substantially as described. I
MICHAEL ROTHFUSS.
