To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE MU LER, of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Gable-Grip, of which the following is a full, clear,-and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a newandimproved cable-grip which gradually grips and releases the rope, and which prevents excessive wear on the same.
The invention consists of setsof pulleys, each composed of two pulleys, of which one is movable toand from the other; of two clampingplates, of which one is stationary and the other is movable, and of a device for moving the The invention also consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as

in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

On the underside of the platform or bottom A of a car for cable railways are mounted one, two, or more sets of pulleys, B, each set being composed of the pulleys O and D, of which the pulley 0 turns loosely upon the spindle O, rigidly attached to the platform A, and the pulley D turns loosely upon the spindle D,secured to one end of a lever, E, pivoted at E, and connected at its other end by a link, F,
with the rod e, which slidesin suitable bear ings attached to the platform A. The outer end of the rod G connects with either end of the platform A by a rope or chain, H, which the platform A, and is The clamping-plate L is provided on each I end with an arm, L, the outer end of which rests loosely on one edge of the lever E.
The operation is as follows: The moving rope P, to be gripped by my device, passes betweeneach set of pulleys B, and between the clamping-plates K and L, and is additionally guided by the guides N, secured to the platform A. When the grip is open, then the distance between the pulleys (land D-of each set of pulleys B is somewhat less than the opening between the clamping-plates K- and L, so that when the operator on either end of the platform A wishes to grip the cable or rope P and winds up the rope or chain H by turning the brake-shaft J, then the outer ends of the levers E are moved inwardly in the direction of the arrow a, thus causing the pulleys D D .above described, they also act on the clamping-plate L, which is thus pressed inwardly toward the plate K, but does not yet grip the cable or rope P at the time that the pulleys O and'D come'in contact with the rope, but only when the operator keeps on winding up the rope or chains H, then the plates L and K, being pressed closer together, will clamp the rope P tightly and hold-the car firmly attached to the rope in conjunction with the pulleys G and D.
lt-will be seen that when the pulleys O and D first come in contact with the moving rope P they will turn on their respective spindles until the pressure exerted by the levers E is enough to clamp the rope between the pulleys and move the car alongwith the rope.- It will also-be seen that by this device the rope or cable P is first gradually clamped between the pulleys O and D, and then firmly gripped be tween the plates K and L, thus avoiding any excessive wear on the rope,and at the same time forming a reliable and easily-operated grip. When the operator unwinds the rope H from the brake-shaft J, then the moving parts assume their former positions by the action of 109 thespring O, coiled on the rod G,'which spring 0 is compressed when the chain or ropes H are wound upon the brake-shaft, as one end of the spring 0 rests on the edge of the movable plate L.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claiin as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a cable-grip, pulleys turning on sta tionary spindles, and a stationary clampingplate, in combination with levers actuated from the brake-shaft, pulleys mounted on stationary spindles on the said levers, and a movable clamping-plate operated by the said levers in such a manner that the cable is first gripped by the said pulleys and then by the clampingplates, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a cable-grip, sets of pulleys, each set composed of a pulley turning on a stationary spindle, and of a pulley turning on a spindle attached to a lever operated from the brake shaft, in combination with two clampingplates, of which one is stationary and the other mounted to slide by the action of the levers, each carrying one pulley, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a cable-grip, the sets of pulleys]? and the clamping-plates K and L, in combination with the levers E, the links F, and the rod G, operated from either end of the platform, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a cable-grip, the pulleys O, turning on the stationary spindles O, the pulleys D, turning on the spindles D, thelevers E, thelinks F, and rod G, operated from either end of the platform, in combination with the clampingplates K and L, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a cablegrip, the pulleys O, turning on the stationary spindles O, and the stationary clamping-plate K, in combination with the pulleys D, turning on the spindles D, the levers E, carrying the spindles D, and connected by the links F with the rod G, operated from either end of the platform A, and the sliding clamping-plate L, substantially as shown and described.
