To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EDWARD J. MeKOWN,
roe and State of New York, haveinvented a cerytain new and useful Improvement in Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription of the same, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this application.
My improvement relates to Argand lamps ;l
and the object is to secure better combustion by the use .of a burner of peculiar construetion, with an interior attachment having a main and auxiliary button,rone located inside the other, and a device for directing the cur'- rents of air to the buttons, all as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l'is a central vertical section of av lamp showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is aperspective view of the button attachment. Fig/3 is an enlarged central section of the device for operating the screw of the Wick-raiser. Fig. 4L is a plan View of vthe wick-raiser and a cross-section of the screwshaft.

-My improvement is as follows: 'E is the burner, which is, fitted in the top of the-lamp, as usual. This burner is in the form of an inverted frustum of a cone, and has perforated sides c c to admit outside air to the burner.

At the top of the .wings a portion of the air passes up inside and a portion outside of the short tubef. The portion lthat goes'up outside passes under the main button h and is deflected outward and downward into the blaze, while that which goes inside the tube passes up under the supplementary buttonV L and ,is deflected outward into the blaze above the main button and at a higher level, as before described; At the same time the air that passes up the exterior cone, G, enters the blaze just at the point of ignition,

By the means above described many currents of air are brought in contact with the blaze at different points, 'which produces bustion and a white light.
' M is a circular band that encircles the wick N around the central air-tube, C, and serves as a raiser. The band may be provided with teeth that hold lin the wick. The band has a stem, k, that projects outward, and is provided with a socket, k', at its outer end to receive the perfect com- 4 IALOO P is the screw. It passes through the socket k and extends up through the .top of the lampbody.
R is a Illing-cap that screws into a nozzle 5 at the top of the lamp. The cap is hollow, and in it is seated a hub, l, which turns freely and is provided with a square open-ended socket, through which the upper square end of the screw-shaft passes loosely. The hub extends up through the top of the cap, and is provided with a thumb-piece, m, by which it is turned. By unscrewing the cap R it, together with lthe hub, can be slipped oii' free from the shaft, and the lamp can then be filled through the opening. Vhen the cap is in place, motion can be imparted to the screw by simply turning the'hub in the cap, thus moving the wick up or down on the central tube, C.
Having described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In an Argand lamp, the combination, with the central air-tube, of the attachment K, consisting of the inner tube, f, the radial 25 wings g g, the main button It] at the top of the tube, with its outer edge curved outward, and
the auxiliary button L inside the main button', as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
2. In an Argand lamp, the combination, with the central air-tube, of the attachment K, consisting of' the inner tube, fradial wings g g, main button h and auxiliary button L, and the exterior cone, G, surrounding the wicktube, as shown and described, and for the pur- 35 pose specified.
3. The, combination, with a central-draft lamp, of the wick-raiser M, and screw P, and the hollow filling-cap R, provided with an interior socket-piece, Z, which is capable of turning, and through which thc upper square end of the screw passes loosely, the screw receiving motion with the socketpiece as it is turned, as set forth.
