To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. CARROLL, of Worcester, county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improveinent in Band Tighteners for Spinning Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a device by which to produce tension upon and take up slack in the spindle-driving band.
Heretofore the drivingband between the drum and spindle-whirl has been acted upon by a sheave mounted upon an axis or stud substantially parallel with relation to the I drum, and the pressure of the sheave has been either upon the top or upon the underside of-the band, such pressure tending to either depress or lift the band from the centerline of the -whirl at its deepest point. I have found by experimentthat the farther the band is carried about and in contact with the bottom of the groove in the Whirl the more positive and accurate the movement of the spindie; and to insure a more extended wrapping of the band about the whirl as the band becomes slack, and also inthe normal condition of the band, I have provided a band-controlling or tension device containing a sheave mounted on a substantially vertical stud, so as to place the top side of the said sheave subs i lly parallel to the top side of the i i die-whirl, the said sheave thus placed acting upon the side ofthe band and moving it horizontally into the bottom of the groove of the whirl rather than out from the bottom of the said groove, as would be the case if the pressted; and Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 2 in the dotted line 00 x, the frame being omitted, the pintle e being shown in elevation.
The end frame, A, spindle-driving drum B, driving-band O, slee'vewhirl spindle D, and bolster-rail a are and may all be of usual construction. *At the rear of the bolster-rail, and in line with each spindle, is a stud or pin, 1;, upon which is mounted a weighted lever or arm, f, l the latter having an eccentrlcallylocated hole, 2, to fit'the said stud or pin. The lever f has at its lower end a Weight, f and the upper end of the said lever is bored longitudinally to receive thepintle e, to the upper end of which is secured the sheave 6*, the upper side of the said sheave thus lying substantially parallel with relation to the upper side of the whirl attached to the sleeve of the spindle, the lower side of the sheave turning substantially in the plane of rotation of the center line of the whirl attached to the sleeve of the spindle. The hole 2 is formed in the lever at one side of its center, and the weight f 2 acts normally to keep the sheave e pressed against the side of the band 0 at lts slack side, the pressure of the said sheave against the band being in a direction to not only force the band into the bottom of the groove of the whirl ,and thus takeup any slack therein, but also to partially bend the band closely about the sleeve whirl. The lever herein shown normally stands in a nearly upright position.
I claim The spindle having a whirl, and the drum to move the spindle-driving band, combined with the lever f, the pintle, and sheave e, the face of which occupying a position in a plane substantially parallel to the face of the whirl on the spindle, the edge of the sheave acting upon the side of the band, forcing it into the bottom of the groove of the Whirl and about the said whirl, substantially as described.
