FIRE-ESCAPE.

The presentinvention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in nre-escapes;-

and it consists in the details of construction substantially as shown in the drawings l and hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, A designates the usual windowcasing or frame, to the upper portion of which I attach my stationary pulley.

The essential feature of my invention con` sistsin the means employed for attaching the pulley to the window casing or frame,whereby it will support the necessary weight when a person is descending from a window, and this without danger of the pulley co ming loose from its fastening,which has heretofore been an objection to this class of fire-escapes.

The pulley, as shown at B, has a grooved periphery of V-shaped form, as shown at c,

which not only forms a guide for the rope b, but forms a means for wedging said rope tight between the sides of the V-shaped groove when it is desired to stop the descent of the person in the carriage or sling Gfor any purpose.

The pulley@ is preferably of semicircular shape, and has secured to its sides metal plates D, which extend up above the periphery of the pulley, and have guide rods c passing outer side) are securely fastened hanger E and hangers F F, the former being bent outwardly in a horizontal direction, thence upwardly in a'vertical direction, thus forming a right-an-v gle bend, d, as shown in Fig. 2, in order to allow the pulley Btc come as near the windowsashes as possible,and at the 'same time attach the bracket E to the upper and'outer side of the window-frame A by suitable screws. The hangers F extend outwardly at an angle to each other, and have their upper ends bent horizontallyin an outward direction, as shown at c, Vfor the purpose of attaching said hangers to the under side of the casing A by screws, which extend up vertically into the same. By means of the arrangement and peculiar c011- struction of these hangers the pulley is rmly held to the window casing or frame by means of the screws which pass into the same both horizontally and vertically, thereby forming a complete fastening for the pulley,without danger of its becoming'loose by the usual weight upon the rope in the descent ofthe person.

The carriage, sling, or hammock' C may be` of any desirable form or construction, and is conn/ected to the rope b by ropes f, a steadycord, g, being connected to the ropes f. If preferred, three or more of the hangers may be used, as found desirable, also a hook, h, may be connected to one end of the steady-cord g, so that means may be attached thereto for preventing sick persons or children from falling out of" the hammock. 'lVhen not in use, the hammock with its, attachments may be disconnected from thepulley and placed in a case at the upper corner of the window-frame out of the way.

It is evident that any suitable carriage, sling, or hammock may be used and connected in any suitable manner to the rope b, and when preferred a guy-rope ymay be attached thereto and extend down to the pavement or ground, to steady the hammock when descending.

The pulley with attachments may be manufactured and placed in the market at agreatlyreducedcost, and ready for attachment by screws to the window-frame, and when thus attached the pulley will depend or bel'ocated ICO directly under the window-frame, instead of upon the outside, thereby bringing the rope within convenient reach of the occupant of the room.
