Description

(No Model.)
TVQ B. JEFPBRY. LANTBRN HANGER FOR BICYCLS.
No. 352.191. PatentedNov. 9, 1886.
r UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICEs THOMAS B. JEFFERY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LANTERN-H-ANGER FOR BICYOLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patentino. 352.191, dared November 9, ieee.
Application filed April 17, 1886. Serial No. 199,221.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs B. JEFFERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ghicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lantern Hangers for Bicycles, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, forminga part thereof, wherein- Figure l is a perspective of the entire hanger. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation oi' the lantern and hanger, the latter being cut at the vertical plane indicated by the dotted line .fr Fig. 3, 'which is a front elevation of the lamp and hanger in position on the axle, the
hubs of the wheel also appearing as stops for the hanger. Fig. 4 is a perspective of a modied form of my improved hanger.
A is a bracket secured fast to the top of the lantern B, so that its vertical `lip A may be considered as a ilange or lug on the top of the lantern.
C C2 are slides or sliding brackets, whose u horizontal branches C1 O2 are slotted at om c2",
and standside by side, their said slots coinciding laterally, so that the clamp-screw D is passed through both and screwed into the vertical lip A of the bracket A. Each of said horizontal branches C10 C20 is provided at the end with a tongue or lng, c 021,' protruding into the slotof the other slide, so that, regardless of the fact that said slides may rest their lower edges upon the surface of the horizontal plate A2 of the bracket A, they are'held in line together for the entire distance between their said lug-bearing ends, and this distance is sufficient to cause them to be rigid as one as respects any strain tending to change their angle to each other in the plane of their faces which are in contact. Said slides have also the vertical branches C G22 at the ends opposite those having the tongues cu 022, respectively, and said vertical branches terminate at their upper ends in the overhanging hooks G12 C22,
' which are interiorly providedwith the packing or cushions c22 022. The hooks O12 O22 are designed as bearings for the lantern upon the axle E of the bicycle, between the hubs F F,
vand the clamp-screw D beingloosened the slides C C2 are moved outward until the hooks 012022 (No model.)
from the axle by accident, an under hook or A bearing, G, is provided, having a cushion, g, on its upperconcave surface and vertically 'adjustable toward and from the lineof the overhanging hooks Clo C20-4. e., toward and from the axle when the hanger is in place thereon. A convenient method of securing this under hook or bearing so that it may be adjusted is that shown in Fig. 2i. A vertical slot, h, is made in the vertical lip A of the bracket A, andthe hook G is given a threaded terminal, g', to pass through the slot h, leaving shoulders g2 g2 to bear against the lip A. A clamp-nut, H, fitted to the threaded terminal g', secures the hook Gat any desired height within the range of the slot h. hooks, G, may be used, as seen in Fig. l, and in that case, preferably, they are clamped upon the vertical arms C21 C2l of the slides, said arms having then the slots 7L h, corresponding precisely to the slot h in the lip A of the bracket. The hooks G and their clamp-nuts H are made precisely alike in the two cases. The adjustable under hook or hooks, G, not only serve as a gate to be opened to admit the axle under the hooks C C2, but also serve to adjust the hanger to axles of different diameters, since it is found desirable that the hanger should iit the axle as snugly as possible without being in danger of being revolved with it.
I clai'mxl. In combination, substantially as set forth, the bracket A, provided with a clamp-screw, the slides having each a horizontal arm slotted to slide onthe clampscrew, and having ex- Two of these under tensions upward at theirvremote ends providedwith bearings to receive the axle, where vided with a clamp-screw, the slides having clamp-screw and having their vertical arms J each a vertical arm hooked at theupper end hooked .at the upper end, and the lower bearto engage the axle, and a horizontal arm slotted ing or bracket adjustable in the slot.
