BOTTLE-WRAPPER. I

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,188, dated November 9, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it knownthat we, MARY A. L. HINE and ORRIN S. REED, of Chicago, county of (look, and State'of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle Wrappers or Envelopes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a wrapper or envelope for bottles and other analogous articles of a fragile nature, the purpose being to prevent breakage when'packed in cases for storage or transportation.

Figure 1 is a plan View of a number of bottle-Wrappers embodying our improved features, and showing their relative position when arranged in a-packing-case. Fig. 2 shows a diaphragm or division-board; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the wrapper. Fig. 4 is a per spective of a projecting ring or flange adapted to encircle the wrappers. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lower end of a wrapper; and Figs. 6, 7, and 8 show modifications.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a bottle wrapper or envelope in the formof a. cylindrical shell or tube open at both ends; B, a protecting-ring adapted to encircle the exterior surface of the wrapper, and G adiaphragm or division-board to be arranged between each series or layer of bottles in the packing-case.

The wrapper or envelope will ordinarily be composed of straw-board; but any other material that is suitable for the purpose may be employed.

This wrapper will usually be provided on the lower end with the lugs a a, which are adapted to be inserted in and project through the rectangular slots of in the division-diaphragm O. The lugs may then be bent inward in the direction of each other and flattened on the under side of the division-board, (see Fig. 3,) thus serving to secure each layer or the series of wrappers in each layer to the said board for the purpose of facilitating the handling of the contents of the package.

The ring or series of rings B.as any numclose fit or bearing on the wrappers, so as to adjustably retain the position in which they are placed. Usually, however, these rings will be provided on the inner edge'with the lips I) b, one of which projects upward, and the second in the opposite direction, as illustrated in Fig. 4:. These lips may be attached to the exterior surface of the wrapper by means of some suitable adhesive composition, thus permanently securing the rings in place. By this means the rings are also prevented from slipping off and being lost, as it is the intention to make a wrapper or envelope of such a durable nature as to permit of the same being used more than once. The rings will be arranged at intervals and alternate on adjacent or companion wrappers, so as to nest together in packing, as shown in Fig. 3. This construction and arrangement of the several parts forms a durable structure, and one that possesses sufficient elasticity to protect the contents of a package against a heavy jar or rough handling.

We do not confine or limit our improvement to the precise construction and arrangement shown, but may make suchchanges in detail and form as will adapt the envelope to 'be used on articles of a different contour other than cylindrical, as illustrated in Figs. 6, 7, and 8.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a bottle-wrapper, the combination, with an envelope or tube forming the wrapper proper, of a number of rings encircling the exterior surface of said wrapper, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
