To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES WARREN STE- VENs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beebe Plain, in the county of Stanstead, in the Province of Quebec, Canada,
Vegetable Slicing Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts. i
This improvement in meat and vegetable slicing machines has for'its object to simplify and perfect the construction of the operating parts of the gage board, to obtain an easy yet steady oblique adjustment of said gage-board with relation to the knife; second, to provide a simple and durable slicing-machine having a folding head-board and swinging gate, and which may be readily folded and compactly arranged one part upon another, to occupy as little space as possible when not in ,use,
In this my improved slicer the knife-holder, provided with the usual obliquely-arranged knife and gage-board, slides in ways in the usual holderframe, which I shall hereinafter designate as the slide-frame, the latter being hinged to the table or base. The table is provided with a headboard hinged thereto and extended in between the uprights and top and bottom pieces of the slide-frame, so that its inner end will be brought into required relation with the path of movement of the knife,

The knife-holder is adapted to slide in the slide-frame, and is provided wit-h a gage-board and the usual stationary board, to which the obliquely-arranged knife is secured. Thegage-board is attached to the k nifeholder in required relation with the knife by means of a wing arranged at the heel of the gage-board and adapted to move in an oblique groove in the knife-holder, and by two slotted arms attached to the beveled end of said gage board and retained by headed screws or studs to the beveled portion of the end piece of the knife-holder. For operating mechanism, the gage-board has a scre'w'rod fixed to a plate pivoted to a sector, which latter is attached to the end piece of the knife holder, the said screw-rod having-a washer and a screw-knob, which, upon being turned, binds the washer to the sector and retains the screw-rod in required adjusted position to said sector. A link pivoted at one end to a bracket on the gageboard and at the other end to the pivoted plate enables the gage-board 'to be moved and adjusted as the screw-rod is moved on the sector. One of the way-pieces is adjusted to the slideframe, so as to provide for wear of parts.
The invention is more fully set forth in the following description, and is particularly pointed out in the claims.

r d, the latter cross-bar having a rabbet to engage the edge of a kitchen table or stand, 0, when in use.
The table A has an extension, 2, faced with thin sheet metal and projecting into theslideframe the depth of the uprights b b, so as to be brought into proper relation with the path of movement of the knife R. The head-board B is hinged at e to the top of the table, and the end next the slide-frame projectsinto said frame a distance equal to the thickness of the uprights, and is rabbeted, as at f, to fit the adjacent upright b, as shown, to serve as a brace to hold the hinged slide-frame in vertical position. A pin, 3, projects from the upright l) and enters an opening in the hinged headboard, to further retain the latter in elevated position.
The top and bottom pieces of theslide-frame are provided along their faces with guides or way-pieces t t,which enter grooves cut in the top and bottom of the knife-holder D, to retain it to the slide-frame and permit the same to slide therein. The lower strip or guide, t, is adjustably secured to the bottom a of the slide-frame by means of the set-screws 4, passing through slots in said guide-piece,whereby the guide may be adjusted to compensate for wear of parts.
The knife R is secured in oblique position to the knife-holder D, havinga handle, y. while I the obliquely-adjustable gage-board E is adjustably supported in the space between the knife and end piece, H, by means of a wing or rib, g, of an L shape in cross-section. This wing having a bent end, 9, is secured to the heel of the gage-board and works in the groove in the bottom of the knife-holder, the latter being faced at the groove with a plate, 9, having an L-shaped slot, 7, and adjustably attached to the k nife'holder by means of headed screws 6, passing through slots in the plate g", as shown. The plate may thus be adjusted to compensate for wear of parts,whereby that end of the gage-board is steadily retained in positiona provision necessary, since looseness thereof prevents the cutting of even regular slices from the articles that may be fed to the knife. The bent end g of the wingg limits the inward movement of the gage-board toward the knife by engaging the plate g.
The front or larger end of the gageboard is beveled and provided with two slotted arms, 71, secured thereto, so that the beveled end will ride on the Similarly-beveled portion of the end piece, H, which latter is provided with headed screws h, entering the slotted arms h, to retain the gage-board to the end piece, and yet allow adjustment thereof.
The oblique adjustment of the gage-board with relation to the knife is accomplished by means .of a screw-rod, t, firmly secured in the present instance to a plate, k, pivoted to a sector, an, attached to the end piece, H, while a connecting-link, p, is pivoted to the plate It and to the bracket 71, fastened to the gage-board, as shown.
The screw-rod projects beyond the curved edge at of the sector m, and receives an L- shaped washer, n, to lap over the edge m, and a screw-knob, 0, adapted to be turned on the screw-rod to bind the washer to the edge m, and thereby hold the said rod to the sector at any desired point.
By adjustment of the screw-rod to the sector at any desired point, the gage-board, through the connecting-link p, is moved obliquely toward or from the knife, whereby any required position is quickly and easily attained, it being necessary simply to slightly unscrew the screw-knob, move the rod along the sectorin the proper direction, and then tighten the parts. Vith the aid of this simple mechanism the gageboard is firmly held in adjusted position parallel with the plane of movement of the knife, whereby slices are uniformly cut of any desired thickness from the article fed to said knife.
The swinging gate P, having an attached post p, is removably mounted on the table A by means ofa pin, 10 (shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1,) at the lower end of the post, entering a hole or socket, 1), (shown in Fig. 3,) in said table. The upper end of the post is reduced, as at r, and the gate itself is provided with the stops 8, both of which engage the top of the slide-frame when the gate is moved therein, to prevent said gate from being forced into the path of movement of the knife R, while at the same time they retain the gate within the slideframe parallel with the knife, whereby all of the article placed on the table may be fed to the knife and sliced.
\Vhat I claim is 1. The combination, in .a slicing-machine, with a table, a connected vertical slide-frame havinga knife-holder with knife, and a head board hinged to the table, of a swinging gate provided with a post removably mounted in the table, as specified, and having a reduced portion at its upper end, and a stop attached to the top of said gate, whereby the gate may be moved into the slide-frame in close proximity to the knife, as specified.
2. The combination, with a knifeholder provided wit-h a knife and L-shaped groove 5/", and the plate having an L-shaped-slot, the elongated screw-slots, and the holdingscrews passing through the screw-slots and into the knife-holder, of a gage-board provided at its smaller end with the wing 9, having bent portion 9, .and mechanism atits larger end to move the gage-board in and out of the knife-holder, substantially as set forth.
