No. 231,130 Claims priority, application Norway Oct. 19, 1961,
Int. (:1. A m 17/04 US. Cl. 29 5 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A sofa-bed having a seat which in a sofa position is constituted by a mattress and a seat cushion resting on the mattress and attached thereto along the front edge thereof. A back rest is pivotally connected at opposite ends thereof to respective arms located at the lateral edges of the mattress and hingedly connected to the frame thereof near the front edge of the mattress, whereat the seat cushion is also attached to the mattress, such that when the sofa is to be converted to a bed, the back rest can be swung down substantially 90 degrees to rest on the seat cushion and therefrom be swung substantially 180 degrees into a position in front of and substantially flush with the mattress. The back rest in the latter position is supported on the floor by means of legs which are turnably supported on the rear side of the back rest. The seat cushion is then turned 180 degrees up from the mattress and upon the out-turned back rest so as to form, together with the back rest and the mattress, the bed surface. Between the back rest and the arms is a locking device which looks the back rest to the arms when the back rest has been swung down onto the seat cushion.
The present invention relates to a double sofa bed, the seat of which in the sofa position is constituted by a mattress and a seat cushion resting on said mattress and fixed to same along its front edge, and the back rest of which sofa at the rear at each end is linked to one end of an arm, which arms are located along each of the short sides of the mattress and are hingedly connected with the frame of said mattress near the front edge where the seat cushion is also fixed so that when the sofa is to be converted to a bed, the back rest may be swung down substantially 90 to rest on the seat cushion and therefrom substantially 180 out to a position in front of and substantially flush with the mattress, in which position the back rest is supported on the floor by means of legs arranged turnably on the rear side of the back rest, the seat cushion being thereupon turned 180 up from the mattress and upon the outturned back rest so as to form, together with said back rest and the mattress, the bed rests.
Sofa beds of this kind are previously known, but they have the disadvantage that they have to be provided with a further pair of arms, serving together with the first pair of arms to guide the back rest in such a way that said rest during the conversion from sofa to bed does not fall down and attain an inclined position during the last part of the movement to bring the legs to rest on the floor.
A primary object of the invention is to provide means for avoiding this drawback, and according to the invention, this is obtained in that between the back rest and the said arms there is arranged a locking device serving to lock the back rest to the arms in a position substantially parallel with same.
According to a further feature of the invention said locking device is combined with the legs turnably arranged on the rear side of the back rest so that the locking is effected when the legs are turned out from the back rest into the position they attain when the back rest is to be supported on the floor to form part of the bed.
These and other features of the invention will be apparent from the following description of the drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the sofa as seen from the rear,
FIGS. 2, 3 and 4 show the sofa from the side with one of the side cheeks forming the arm rests removed, as sofa, in an intermediate position during the conversion to a bed and in the bed position respectively,
FIG. 5 shows one end of the sofa in the bed position as seen from above, and
FIG. 6 shows the invention used as a sofa bed of the kind having either three parallel bed rests or the bed rest or rests arranged in in relation to the bed rest as shown in the foregoing figures.
The sofa bed according to the invention and as shown in FIGS. 1-5 consists substantially of a mattress with a frame 1 provided with four legs 2, substantially of the same kind as a couch or divan. At the short sides of said mattress frame and near its front and rear edges there are fastened spaced pieces 3 and 4 having holes 3' and 4 respectively for fixing respective side cheeks 5 forming the arm rests by means of screws or the like. Near the top of said side cheeks 5, and at the rear edge there are fastened blocks 6' which are interconnected by means of a ledge or rail 6, see especially FIG. 1. Between the ledge 6 and the rear side of the mattress frame 1 there may be fixed a textile web 20, also shown in FIG. 1, so that the space between said textile web and the rear of the back rest 8 may be used for storing bed linen. Said back rest 8 rests with its lower edge on the rear portion of a wedge-shaped seat cushion 7 which is fastened to the front edge of the mattress or the mattress frame 1, so that the cushion may be swung up from the mattress.
To the inclined upper side of the foremost pieces 3 is fixed, by screws, a hinge blade 12 which is linked at 11 with the front end of a pair of arms 9 which extend rearwardly outside the end portions of the mattress frame 1 and then upwards into a portion designated by numeral 13. Said portion 13 of each of the arms 9 has fixed to it a forwardly pointing ear 10 forming a bearing for a pin 10 protruding from the lower part of the back rest 8 so that same may be swung down on the seat cushion 7.
In said downturned position, the back must be locked in order to prevent the same, when subsequently turned to the position in FIG. 4, from dropping to an inclined position. This locking may be carried by a special means, and in the embodiment shown the back is preferably combined with feet 14, which are turnably supported on the rear side of the back rest. Said feet have the form of U-shaped hoops, the free ends of which are linked to angular mountings 15 by means of pins 16, see especially FIGS. 2 and 3. Said angular mountings 15 are fixed to the rear of the back rest 8. Each of the feet 14 is provided with a pin or finger 17 which in the downturned position of the back rest will cooperate with the portion 13 of each of the two arms 9 when the feet are turned up to attain the position shown in FIG. 3. In said position the feet will block the back rest. As also appears from FIG. 3, the feet are provided with a protrusion 18 carrying a castor 19 which will first reach the floor during the conversion into a bed, so as to facilitate the turning of the back rest to the position shown in FIG. 4.
As clearly appears from FIG. 5, due to the spaced pieces 3 and 4, there will be slots between the cheeks 5 and the respective end portions of the mattress frame 1, in which slots the U-shaped arm 9 can be accommodated so as to be invisible in the sofa position, the seat cushion 7 having end portions which will contact the inner side of the respective cheeks to cover said slots.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 2-5, the seat cushion 7 is only connected with the mattress or mattress frame 1 along the front edge thereof so that it has to be turned to the position shown in FIG. 4 by a separate manipulation after the back rest has been turned down to the position shown in FIG. 3.
Both arms 9, 13, one at each end of the sofa, are preferably rigidly interconnected by a bar 13 welded to the portions 13 so as to be located in the wedge-shaped space between the rear edge of the seat cushion 7 and the lower curved end of the back rest, see FIGS. 2-4.
FIG. 6 shows the invention used in connection with a sofa bed of the type having three parallel bed rests or one or two, possibly also three bed rests located 90 in relation to the bed rests according to FIGS. 1-5.
The sofa frame is designated 21, 22 and has feet 23 fixed to it. To the short end pieces 21 of the said frame are fixed, in known manner, and in the same way as described above, cheeks 24 forming the arm rests of the sofa.
Between said arm rests and a mattress frame 24 resting on the top of the frame 21, 22, are located angularly shaped arms 31, 34 to the portions 34 of which are fixed ears 33 forming bearings for the turnable back rest 30. Near the top of the frame portions 21 are fixed ledges or rails 25 for castors 26 arranged on the mattress frame 24 near its rear edge, so that said mattress together with the seat cushion 28, the arms 31, 34 and the back rest 30 may be pulled forward and leave the frame 21, 22 open. When pulled, as described, a pair of legs 40 linked to the mattress frame 24 will drop to support said frame in the position shown in dotted lines. After the back rest 37 has been turned down and locked to the arms 31, 34 by the feet 35 being swung out from the rear side of the back rest, and the back rest has then been turned further 180 followed by the seat cushion 28, a further mattress 36 is turned down to serve as a further portion of the bed rest or rests. Said further mattress 36 is linked to the sofa frame 21, 22 by means of arms 38 and pins 39, so that it may either be kept in a vertical position when swung up against the wall or the ledge 6 shown in FIGS. 1-5, or may be swung down on the frame 21, 22, as already mentioned.
What I claim is:
1. A sofa bed having a seat which in a sofa position is constituted by a mattress, and a seat cushion resting on said mattress and attached thereto along the front edge thereof, a back rest having opposite ends, an arm linked to each end of the back rest, the arms being located at each of the lateral edges of the mattress and being hingedly connected to the mattress near the front edge thereof, whereat the seat cushion is also attached so that the back rest, when the sofa is to be converted to a bed, may
be swung down substantially to rest on the seat cushion and therefrom be swung substantially into a position in front of and substantially flush with the mattress while the seat cushion can be turned 180 up from the mattress and onto the outturned back rest so as to form, together with said back rest and the mattress, a bed surface, legs turnably supported on the rear side of the back rest for supporting the back rest on the floor in the bed position, and a locking device between the back rest and said arms for locking the back rest to the arms in a position substantially parallel with same when the back rest has been swung down on the seat cushion.
2. A sofa bed as claimed in claim 1 wherein said locking device is cooperatively arranged with said legs on the rear of the back rest such that locking is effected when the legs are turned out from the back rest into the position they attain when the back rest is to be supported on the floor to form part of the bed.
3. A sofa bed as claimed in claim 2 wherein said locking device is constituted by a protrusion on the supporting legs for lockably engaging each of said arms.
4. A sofa bed as claimed in claim 1 comprising spacer pieces secured to said mattress at the lateral edges thereof, side cheeks secured to said spacer pieces at the lateral edges of the mattress, said side cheeks defining openings with said mattress at the lateral edges thereof, said openings being covered by respective end portions of the seat cushion in the sofa position, said arms being hoop-shape and being accommodated in said openings in the sofa position.
5. A sofa bed as claimed in claim 1 comprising a sofa frame, rollers on said mattress enabling the latter to be pulled forwardly to a position in front of said sofa frame, a further mattress pivotably connected to said sofa frame at the rear thereof, said further mattress in the sofa position being upright and covered by said back rest, and in said bed position being turned down on the sofa frame to constitute a portion of the bed surface, the remainder of which is constituted by the first said mattress and the outturned back rest with the seat cushion thereon.
