PERMUTATlON-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 351,995, dated November 2, 1886.
Application filed June 10, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN H. MORRIS and THOMAS D. MORRIS,1esiding at Seward, in the county of Seward and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Permutation-Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents the outside of a cabinet-door with our improved lock attached. Fig. 2 shows the inside of the same. Fig. 3 is the same with locking-wheels removed and the sliding latch exposed. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 00 x of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the sliding latch.
Our present improvement relates to combination door and drawer locks; and it consists in the combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In order to enable others to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe the exact manner in which we have carried it out.
In the drawings, A A represent two slotted wheels slightly cogged or roughened on the periphery, these points or projections serving the purpose of locking the wheels, as will be hereinafter described. The wheels are mounted upon and secured to the hubs B B by means of the screws a a, and are revolved by the knobs b b, extending out from the dials O, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
On the main lock-plate D we secure the sliding latch d by means of the guide-hooks d, or other well-known devices, so as to allow the latch to slide freely, for a purpose hereinafter explained.
The fixed studs 0 0, within the slot E in latch d, necessarily control and limit the sliding movements of said latch. On the front edge of the sliding latch we secure the rigid notched projections e e, for the purpose of locking the wheels A A when the said projections are out of line with the slots (1', the notches in the projections fitting upon the points on the periphery of the wheels, and the projections themselves fitting snugly in the slots a cut into the wheels, when the latch is caused to slide back. On the front edge of the latch and near its center we secure the loop F, which strikes and rises upon the cam portion '12 of the catch I, secured to the inner casing of the door. (See Fig. 4.) As the loop rides upon the cam t, the slidinglatch is forced back, the notched projections passing into the slots (1; but when the loop drops into the inclined slot t", which again brings the latch forward, it releases the projections e e from the slots at. It is evident now that by changing the position of the wheels so that the slots 0. no longer register with the projections e e, the latch cannot be thrown back, and the loop F will remain firmly held in the catch I and the door will be locked.
The lock-plate D is cast with. a lug, l, at each end, provided with abolt,.m, which passes through the door for securing the lock in position on the door.
By loosening the screws or a the wheels A A may be turned, so that the projections e on the sliding latch will set to register with the slots a, and with the dials O in any desired position. When itis desired to open the lock, it is only necessary to return the dials to the same position as when the door was locked. This will again bring the slots a in line with the projections e 6, when the sliding latch may be readily moved back and out of the slot 2', and the door be opened.
Having thus explained our inveution,what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent, is
1. In a door or. drawer lock, the slotted and roughened wheels A A, mounted on and secured to the hubs B B, in combination with the plate D and sliding latch d, and a suitable catch, all constructed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the wheels A A and a sliding latch having a loop, F, and projections e, of a catch, I, having a cam portion, t, whereby a slot, 2', is formed between said cam portion-and the main portion 01" the catch,
substantially as herein described.
